ANTIQUE~Wonderful AUTHENTIC CHINESE TANG-STYLE SANCAI ROOF TILE~FLYING HORSE
What a cool piece this is! Authentic Chinese roof tile from right around the turn of the 20th century. Depicts a flying horse(the Chinese believed the horse has magic powers) as evidenced by the cloud motifs under its body and hooves. Done in classic Sancai colors of caramel, green, black and the natural cream of the pottery itself. Seated upon a roof tile, this would have graced the roof of an important building. Still has some of the cement/mortar on the underside. May once have had a pottery tail, though I see no evidence of that. I suspect the tail was real horse hair, long since gone. That left an opening that the previous owner filled with raffia. I have to admit, it's pretty charming that way. This is a great piece, and very hard to find! Unsure of maker. Has a large chip along the roof tile on one side(probably happened when it ... morewas removed from the roof) As well as small chips on the back and opposite side. A few tiny chips to the horse, almost too negligible to mention. In great shape considering! See photos. 10 3/4" tall x 13 1/4" long x 5 1/2" wide. PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AT MY OTHER LISTINGS. Antique or Vintage Chinese Roof Tile Polychrome Warrior on Horseback
Chinese Warrior on Horseback Polychrome Roof Tile An early Chinese(or Japanese? Polychrome Roof Tile of a Warrior on Horseback. I have no idea of the date or origin. I know that many similar tiles were made in the mid-1900s based on ancient classical forms- this is very likely one of those! The color palette. The attention to details, the warrior’s fierce expression, the horse’s look of motion- all are evocative of ancient Asian sculpture. Measures 13” long x 19” wide x 4” deep. The horse and warrior are beautifully sculpted with great attention to details. There are small chips in the horse’s mane and in the fringe of the saddle(see my photos. There may be other less obvious ones which I missed. Three of the horse’s four legs have been broken at the ankle. One was glued some time earlier and two were totally detached when I purchased the ... moretile at auction- I taped them loosely in position for the photos. They will probably come undone during shipping- although I will do my best to protect them. One of the horse front hooves seems tp be foreshortened? You can see from the back that this figure was actually a REAL roof tile. I think that mounted to a board this piece will make an extraordinary objet d’art. It has great charm! I
Vintage Roof Tile from Japanese Buddhist Temple, Guardian Figure, Onigawara
This is a roof tile from a Japanese Buddhist temple. It was given to me by some Buddhist priests in Japan. Who have access to such items. It is likely from a temple that was demolished, and I have no idea about the age. I would imagine from 1868 to 1940. It is definitely not new, as new tiles have a gray tint to them. This one has much patina. The figure is probably Kongōrikishi(金剛力士) or Niō(仁王) Two figures who guard the Buddha(Sanskrit name Vajrapani) Two of these figures, terrifying in their power, usually guard the entrance to major Buddhist temples in Japan and other Asian countries. This is a charming folk version of the same thing. It is also a kind of"onigawara, a protecting figure on roofs that depicts a"devil" to scare off other devils and evil influences. He holds a sword in his right hand extending along his leg ... moreand leans forward in a posture of vigilance to deter all enemies. The figure is made of clay and is in excellen t condition-no cracks. Of course it is a hard-fired tile so is roughly hewn. It is about 10 inches tall. 5 inches wide, and 4 inches to 2 inches deep. The weight is 3 pounds, 10 ounces. There are holes at the back to affix the tile to the roof, and the top one extends through to the top so that it can be hung on a wall. I have simply leaned it against the wall on a shelf. This is a rare item. And you will see that similar items charge hundreds of dollars in shipping fees alone to be sent from Japan. I offer free shipping of this charming folk guardian figure within the US. Thank you for looking. And please email me with any questions.
Japanese Woodblock Print, Nagao Ueno, Red Temple with Blue Tile Roof
Japanese woodblock print. By noted sosaku hanga printmaker Nagao Ueno, a very rare and sought-after design. Measures about 16 x 13” image size plus margins. Great color and impression; conditionwise, the print has some professionally repaired edge tears, which are much more visible from the back than from the front. I bought the print framed, and thought it looked very fine indeed. It is a great design, and a very rare print(edition of only 20) Buyer to pay $25 for EMS shipping from Japan, with full insurance and tracking number.

ANTIQUE CROCK JAMES B. HAMILTON GREENSBORO PA. 1871 REDWARE ROOF TILE
THIS IS A GREAT PIECE OF AMERICAN HISTORY- IT IS A JAMES B. HAMILTON. GREENSBORO, PA. REDWARE OR EARTHENWARE ROOF TILE STAMPED JBH 1871 THERE IS ONE EXACTLY LIKE IT YOU CAN SEE ON THE WINTERTHUR MUSEUM WEBSITE. IT IS MUSEUM# 1967.0205.001 HERE IS ALSO AN EXCERPT FROM THE GREENSBORO HISTORY SITE: Albert Gallatin. A partner in the Albert Gallatin Company, purchased lots in Greensburgh in 1795. On a trip to Washinton, D.C. he met a group of German glass blowers who were heading to Kentucky to form their own company. He urged them to consider settling in Greensburgh. The group settled in New Geneva in 1790 and the plant operated there until 1805 when it moved to the northern section of Greensburgh, later called Old Glassworks. By 1807 the quality of Glassworks Glass was recognized as superior throughout the country. Old Glassworks did a booming ... morebusiness and prosperity filled the streets of Greensburgh. Albert Gallatin sold his interest in the glass factory to the Kramers. Who operated it until 1849. Although the Glassworks Glass Factory closed in 1849. By 1859 the town, now known as Greensboro, was flourishing with 500 inhabitants. Much of the success of the town was due to river trade and travel and other industries such as the pottery business and the Tile Manufacturing Company which produced roof tile. Souvenirs of both industries are still treasured by many residents in the form of Greensboro Crocks and roof tile with the inscription JBH-Patent 1871. THIS TILE IS IN GREAT CONDITION. ANTIQUE CHINESE ROOF TILE / MAN RIDING CHILIN === ASIAN CERAMIC
WONDERFUL ANTIQUE CHINESE ROOF TILE MAN RIDING CHILIN This tile is of a man riding a Chilin& dates from the early 1900's. It is multi-colored. With a beautiful green being the dominant color. The mythological figures on the tiles were used as symbols of good omens for the household. And were placed on eaves of the roof. Chilin are thought to be a symbol of these good omens: protection. Prosperity, success, longevity and serenity. It is often depicted with what looks like fire all over its body. There are many different ways Chilin have been described: as a rare form of unicorn; a creature with the head of a dragon and a body of tiger with scales; with a single horn on its forehead. A multicolored back. Hooves, the body of a deer and the tail of a lion. Although it looks fearsome. The Chilin only punishes the wicked. Note: There are ... moretwo small pieces missing from backside hooves. But they in no way detract from the front view. Overall appearance. see two images for chips on rear side of hooves) We have 3 other roof tiles in this style with other designs on EBAY. The group would make a wonderful set. To view them click"other items" below and search"Chinese roof tiles" There are wires for hanging attached to rear; there are holes to aid in mounting on a stand Size: 12 inches long. 14 1/2 inches high weight: 5 pounds 7 ounces US SHIPPING: USPS Parcel Select or Priority Mail INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING: USPS Priority Mail Shipping fee includes insurance Click SHIPPING tab above for details Please view my other Asian antiques- click"other items" below; then sort"highest first" Check out my!
