ROSS'S BELFAST BOTTLE This auction is for a very old round bottom bottle embossed ROSS'S BELFAST. It's clear glass and has a crudely made top. Not quite a blob top, but has more of a flat sided top. Numerous large and small air bubbles. About 8-3/4" long. No cracks. But does have chips on the top. Has surface scratches and a mud/soiled interior. Why would anyone make a round bottom bottle? I've been told that the rounded bottom was to ensure that the bottle was left on its side so that the cork would not dry out and shrink. Causing the contents to loose carbonation or evaporate. Many round bottom bottles were used as"ballast bottles" since many of them were imported from Europe as"ballast" keel weight) in ships returning to the United States.
