YOU ARE BIDDING ON A 1873 TRADE DOLLAR 420 GRAINS 900 FINE. THIS COIN IS A NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE COIN TO FIND AND IF YOU DO COME ACROSS ONE ITS MOST LIKELY A REPLICA. THIS IS THE REAL DEAL! THIS COIN HAS NEVER BEEN CLEANED OR POLISHED SO IT IS IN ITS ORIGINAL STATE. I HAVEN'T HAD IT APPRAISED OR SEND OUT. BUT I CHECKED ITS AUTHENTICITY IN NUMEROUS PLACES. During the late 1860's and in the early part of the 1870's. America traded with the Far East countries particularly with China. However, the Chinese businessmen were more in favor of the Mexican peso as the form of exchange since it contained more silver than the regular US silver dollar. The Americans were compelled to swap their dollar to the Mexican peso in order to maintain trade relations. However, this was an added burden to the American merchants as they have to pay for broker ... morefees. In order to counteract the advantage of the Mexican peso and uphold the American trade in the Far East, the Congress authorized the production of the US Trade Dollar in 1873. This US dollar had 90% silver(900 fine) and weighed 420 grains compared to the Mexican peso which weighed only 416 grains with 0.903 fine and the regular US silver dollar that weighed 412.5 grains with 0.900 fine. The Trade Dollar depicted the Lady Liberty resting on a bale of cotton near the seashore with a bundle of grain at the back. She is holding an olive twig with her right hand portraying a welcoming gesture for the people on the Far East. The reverse design exhibits an eagle holding an olive twig and pieces of arrow with its talons. The inscriptions"TRADE DOLLAR. 420 GRAINS and.900 FINE" are found below the image of the eagle. In initial two years of the Trade Dollar production. The majority ended up in Asia. To prevent counterfeits, several pieces that were circulated in the Far East were stamped with"chop marks" in order to warrant its authenticity and weight.
