RAREST Old Ballot Box Marbles Voting Masonic w/ LOCKING INTERIOR BOX TRIP
This is a very rare and very complicated black ball voting machine. it starts out with a beautiful oak round donut beautiful attached to cut glass. it is here you put in the marble. it falls 2 inches to a trip plate. The trip plate is controlled buy your finger see photos 2. Pull out the finger trip and away it falls to the bottom of the interior lock box. When it falls into the lock box it passes through a hole in the top of box that is open only when the lock box is inside the voting machine. The voting machine inside has a steel shaft that pushes the trap door of the lock box open when inside the voting machine. when the box is taken out the trap door closes tight and can not be opened from the top. the inside box is also locked with a key as will as the entire voting machine. For sale is a field ballot for the 1864 Presidential Election of Abraham Lincoln. I worked for the Ohio Sec. of State from 83 to 86. And these were found in a store room. The Ohio Historical Society took what they wanted, and us field reps. could then take some for our counties for distribution. OHS said that these ballots were taken to the battlefield, actually for both candidates, and the soldiers put the ballot in a box for the candidate they wished to vote for. The other ballot was probably thrown away or dropped or who knows what. Back then, not many controls for fraud! Anyway, I don't have the best camera to take pics, but did the best I could. These are truly a unique piece of American History. The ballots were not uniform either. Each county printed their own. So some counties had their name printed on it, some counties just wrote ... moretheir name on the top, and others borrowed from another county, so you might see one with one name printed, scratched out, and another county name written in.mostly in pencil. Some ballots have a pin hole in the middle. To send the ballots back, the soldiers used a"needle" to string them together, thus securing them for transport. All my items come from a non-smoking environment. I do have a copy of a copy of a copy of the ordinance/resolution that authorized these to be printed. Not sure how readable it is, but can send with. Antique 5 slotted cylinderical tin mule carrying Ballot Box? Geo. Barnard 1880s
To be honest. I'm not really sure what this is, but the company that is named, Geo. D. Barnard of St. Louis made similar looking items, only of a different dimension and only one slot that were patented as ballot boxes to be carried by mules on election day to the county election counters. I am thinking this is very similar only having five different slots and separate sections maybe for different precincts. It has the starts of a locking mechanism where there is a bar that goes across the inside where the lever on the outside can move down to lock the doors shut- only it looks like a knob of some kind would be threaded to that lever and maybe locked through a hole on the middle door somehow. Something else is missing as there is a set of holes in the center at one spot that likely had another piece of metal attached- if it really was ... morea different version of their ballot box, that metal would have been curved out so as to better fit the mule's body. It is over 17 inches long and just over 5.5 inches in diameter and a cylinder shape. The slots are about 2 inches long but each one is torn a bit more along the bottom edge as if it was used for something else since then. Too small to be a mailbox slot, it makes me really think it's just an improvement or option on their mule ballot box. The decoration is well worn in spots, there are big dents in spots as well and the Japanning is weak in areas. Still, though, this could be a very rare piece of political election history, or well, I don't really know. If you have any ideas let me know, I've just never seen one of these. This will be more clear than the digital photo shows. The high bidder is to pay for shipping. VINTAGE HAND-CRAFTED WOODEN BALLOT BOX. Most likely from a 30's- 60's Masonic Lodge or Odd-Fellows. Elks, Eagles, ETC. there is a"57" scrawled in black crayon inside-but I don't know if that is a reference] The four joints of the box are mitered which would suggest an experienced craftsman. Often many of these were made by members. 6&1/2" across and 14&1/2" from face to handle end. Hand carved marble slot(but it has lost its marbles) The handle would suggest that this box was carried around to the voters as in a lodge or union hall.

Nearly 51 years old.Great Conversation Piece Up for bids we have 2 vintage cloth ballot bags from IL. They are printed PRIMARY ELECTION APRIL 10. 1962. They were unused at that time, as they have blank spaces to fill in with the number of ballots, names of the district, precinct, and county. Although never used for ballots. I believe these were used for dish cloths or some other use around the home. They have been opened to size 33" x 34 1/2" and have had a narrow hem stitched around all the edges. This cotton material is quite soft and absorbent. One even has a neatly sewn patch on it. Both have some rust color stains. Your questions are always welcome. 18th Century Mahogany Ballot Box with Brass Hardware
Up for bid is this lovely 18th Century ballot box made of mahogany. It's in very good condition for its age. Cube shaped. The box measures approximately 7x7x7 inches. The lid has a brass handle straddling a brass slot plate. The rich wood grain is nicely stained. The sides are joined by dove tailing. Initially, it looks like there's a flaw. The top of one side has a rough, ragged edge. But you quickly realize the clever wood worker found a way to make the lid lay perfectly in the uneven edge. Seeing how they fit together just makes the box more interesting. The bottom of the box appears to be hand sawed. The tiny nails appear to be hand made. This piece was purchased a generation ago in New Jersey from a seller who claimed at the time the ballot box likely had ties to the NJ legislature. But whatever its history, this is still a handsome ... moreand collectible accent piece today.

Definitely NOT something you can happen across every day! Old vintage. Province of Ontario, elections ballot box! Very sturdy box construction- galvanized steel, carrying handle, ballot slot, lock hasp, and hinged lid. Very good condition- no overt damage, just normal age/wear. Has polling station number 36 on top and one side, but then the opposite side has 26- polling station number changed! Notice how the slot is just large enough to fit a folded ballot- weld work around the opening- it was custom made to be that exact size, according to election law requirements. The source of the term“blackballing” This may have been made in the late 19 th century(we saw a similar one in a newspaper… not the exact same one) It has definite wear. Measures 9 1/8" x 6 1/8" by 3 3/4" Tall. Fully Operational This very rare wooden ballot box was/is used by a variety of fraternal organizations to vote on the acceptance of new members or other agenda items where a person’s vote could be kept secret. Blackball” balloting dates back to the 17th century. It was. And perhaps still is today, a system used mainly in fraternal organizations and clubs where the perpetuation of unanimity is essential to the well being of the organization. It is important that all ... moremembers have the right to vote but it is equally important that partisan divisions do not disrupt the unity of the group. In this case the box is unmarked so we cannot know what organization used it. This box has two sections. One that is open and one that is covered with a sliding lid. The process that was used for a vote would have one of the members pass around the ballot box-thus the handle. The white marbles and some black marbles would be in the open section of the box. When the box reached a member who was to vote, they would reach in and pick either a white(indicating a yes vote) or a black marble(indicating a no vote) and then place the marble in the hole. In the case of this very unique box there is a hand carved half round cup that catches the marble and also shields the color of the marble from the prying eyes of others. The voters hand would shield the color of the marble from the top. The collected marbles would be kept in the box under the lid until the vote was finished at which time the moderator would open the lid and separate the white(yes) from the black marbles(no) and determine the outcome of the vote.
