Gold Washed 60 mm Baoule Brass Pendant - African Trade Bead
For Sale- A nice 60 mm(2.3" diameter brass pendant. Made by the Baoule of West Africa. This is a relatively new item, maybe less than 20-25 years old. I believe it is gold washed but I'm not an expert on these items. It has a much brighter sheen than the photos show. It's in great shape and would be a nice complement for trade beads in a necklace design. For international. Antique Knife. From the mid. to late 1800's it has a clip point semi stiff blade 7 in. long marked AMERICAN CUTLERY COMPANY. knife is about 12 1/8 in. long overall. knife has full tang. it has dark hard handles held with 1 steel pin and pewter bolster and pewter end cap with acorn pewter inlays there is a tiny peice of the pewter missing on one side of the handle please see photos. knife is in good condition with old honest wear. handle is tight. blade has no rust or pitting. the newer sheath made by me is about 13 in. long by 4 1/4 in. wide made with cow hide and tacked with antique sq. shank brass tacks. This is a REALLY FABULOUS Beaded Indian Trade Wallet. It is even beaded on the inside edges. There are no missing beads and only1 pulled but not broken thread. It shows in photo 8 top left. It is in EXCELLENT shape for its age. The zipper and snap work well and the leather is still soft and supple. Please use the photos as your guide. Lengthy. 2+ pg. letter, approx. 8" x 10-1/8" dated at New York City. Sept. 22, 1839, from Elijah Paine. Jr. signed"E. Paine" to Edward Augustus Russell, at Middletown, Ct. Folded letter has red"NEW-YORK" cds postmark and manuscript"12-1/2" rate. The writer of this letter. Elijah Paine. Jr. 1796-1853) Was the son of Elijah Paine, 1757-1842) who served in the U.S. Senate from Vermont, 1795-1801. Elijah Paine, Jr. graduated from Harvard in 1814, and attended the Litchfield Law School, and practiced law in New York City, where he rose to eminence in the bar. He was a Judge on the Superior Court of New York, 1850-1853. The letter is written to Edward Augustus Russell. 1797-1874) Born in Middletown, Ct. Brother of Samuel Russell, who founded the China trading firm of Russell& Co. in Canton, China, 1820. ... moreEdward A. Russell sailed to China in 1825 to work for his brother, but had to return to the U.S. less than 2 years later because of illness. He was a partner of noted merchant George Douglass in NYC, and President of the Commercial Insurance Co. 1835 until 1838, when he returned to Middletown, Ct. where he was involved in the U.S. silk industry. He later served as Mayor of Middletown, 1857-1861. An interesting letter pertaining to the China Trade. In which Elijah Paine writes concerning legal strategy in a case in which Russell is involved. Citing a letter received from"Olyphant" concerning a ship being detained by the authorities in Canton, China, and the authorities stopping trade there and not allowing foreigners to leave. Olyphant& Co. was an important China Trading firm, founded in 1828 by David W.C. Olyphant of Rhode Island. Includes: Yours of this date has just been received. Mr. Olyphant's extract says. He was born in Charles County, Maryland, and by 1812, he had moved to Baltimore, where he was a partner in the shipping& mercantile business of his older brother. In the siege of Baltimore in 1814, during the War of 1812, George was a volunteer soldier, and was ordered to Fort McHenry, and was subjected to the heavy bombardment through the night of Sept. 13-14th(the inspiration for the"Star Spangled Banner" He moved to New York City in 1824, where he became a commission merchant in the West Indies trade, acquired a substantial fortune, ... moreand was able to retire from active business at age 48. In 1815, he married Mary McElderry(1797-1874) whose beauty led her to be known as"the Belle of Baltimore" The had 17 children, of which 10 lived to adulthood. His 2nd daughter, Letitia, married U.S. Senator from Michigan, Zachariah Chandler. The letter is written to Edward Augustus Russell. 1797-1874) Born in Middletown, Ct. and brother of Samuel Russell, who founded the Canton China trading firm of Russell& Co. in 1820. Edward A. Russell sailed to China in 1825, to work for his brother, but had to return to the US within 2 years due to illness. He worked for George Douglass in NYC, eventually becoming a partner, until around 1835, when he became President of the Commercial Insurance Co. where he served until 1838, until retiring from active business, and moving back to Middletown, Ct. He served as Mayor of Middletown, 1857-1861, and in the Ct. State Senate. An interesting letter in which George Douglass writes his old business partner concerning a proposal which Russell had made to invest in the cotton yarn business.
