The 1880 is always in demand for high-quality type purposes. Survivors of this 1,987-piece delivery are usually sharply struck and possessed of strong eye appeal. Proof Trade Dollars were officially struck in the Philadelphia Mint every year from 1873 through 1883. The 1878 is a proof-only issue. Although the Carson City and San Francisco Mints did deliver business strikes that year. Beginning in 1879, however, the only Trade Dollars produced in any United States coinage facility were proofs struck in Philadelphia for sale to collectors. As a rule, the later-date issues from the 1878-1883 era are more readily obtainable ... morein today's market than the earlier deliveries, particularly in the highest grades, but the former's proof-only status means that they actually enjoy slightly stronger demand among buyers. The proof Trade Dollar series ends with two unofficial. Albeit extremely famous rarities. revolutionary war era axe, dated 1772, orginal handle, fur trade axe, indian axe
Offering for bid an authentic revolutionary war or fur trade belt axe dated! Total length is 15" Bit is 2" length is 5 1/2" The eye of axe is approx. 1 1/2" and there are three rose head nails pushed through the eye into handle. There is a wide crack in the handle and a 1 1/2" pewter band around the handle. This might be a period repair or maybe just for decoration. There is a date on the band of 1772 and several punch decorations medicine wheel etc. There is a white substance at the eye of axe and I don't know what it is maybe lime? The base of handle has a iron ring 2 3/4" in dia. with a brass"tinkler" thimble. There are traces of charred wood at the base of handle. There are some black ink numbers written on the axe, I believe this piece was excivated from some old fort wall in Penn. area. Just ... moremy thoughts! This is really a nice piece from the fur trade era and would add to any revolutionary or fur trade collection.
