It is a Wien bridge resistance-tuned oscillator with the famous light-bulb stabilized negative feedback circuit designed by William Hewlett while doing graduate work at Stanford. Patent#2268872. Application filed in 1939 and granted in 1942) The original HP-200 was built and sold out of Hewlett's garage with fellow Stanford grad David Packard. Marking the founding of Hewlett-Packard. Output for the 200C is specified as 100 milliwatts. 10 volts into a 1000 ohm load. Although this is labeled an audio oscillator, and it does indeed cover the full audio spectrum, its upper range is well beyond audio, in the VLF radio range at 200 KHz. This HP 200CD was tested working on all bands. You can see it connected to my scope. The Model 200CD and its sister instrument. The Model 200AB, were introduced at the same time in 1952. These new oscillators represented a substantial increase in versatility over previous ones. For example, the frequency range of the 200CD(5 cps to 600 kc) was such that it replaced two of the older HP oscillators. Models 200C and 200D, which were discontinued. This was accomplished without an increase in price. The wide frequency coverage made this instrument very valuable as a general purpose oscillator.

HP-8640 Opt323 Main Oscillator Assembly This purchase is for one HP USM-323 Main Oscillator part number 08641-60100 with front casting number 46210 1. This unit has been repaired. Cleaned, lubed and tested by an ex-navy senior chief electronic tech. 1- It was dissassembled. Cleaned, lubricated, reassembled and adjusted for proper output levels and frequencies across the band. 2- The pile-up gear was cleaned and inspected with end stops adjusted for minimum and maximum oscillator frequencies as listed in the tech manual. 3- The VT pot gears were inspected and repaired as necessary. The VT Pots were properly positioned and adjusted to work correctly with the pile-up gear. The Vt adjustment was made to trigger the relays in the devider-filter assembly within the proper frequency range. Vt adjustment may be needed once installed in your unit. ... more4-The oscillator was tested to meet specifications as to frequencies and dBm minimum and maximum levels across the band. 5- The oscillator fine tune control was tested to fall within the 200ppm specification. Frequency shift depends on band selected. 6- The above tests were made after a three hour warm up and stabization period as required for this signal generator. 7- Upon instellation of this oscillator in your Opt-323 sig gen. Hewlett Packard Model 200C Wide Range Audio Oscillator(S/N# A2203) Item is in FAIR overall physical condition and needs a FULL restoration. This item was Hewlett Packard’s 3rd series of their original product and the 200C offered a 4th range that allowed the unit to cover 20-200KHz in 4 ranges. We believe that this unit is an early production unit from the early 1940’s and it appears to be complete. The power cord was old and cracked with bare wire exposed so we cut it off. There is light surface rust on the unit since these early units had very thin paint but with a little steel wool cleaning and some good Grey enamel paint. This unit could be made to look very nice. The last time it was calibrated according to a calibration sticker on the side of the unit was in the very early 1960’s.
