These Repousse Vinaigrette Perfume Lockets were created to protect delicate noses. A sponge or cloth soaked in vinager or perfume was placed in the locket and could be held to the nose to cover unpleasant smells. This Silver Plated Cameo locket is a lovely example. It is double sided, hinged to open for inserting a sponge, and has openings for the perfume. The same cameo design is on each side. The woman portrayed has a flower in her hair and a ribboned wreath of flowers surrounds her cameo. Slight differences are probably due to different molds for the top and bottom pieces. The locket has a clever locking tab that must be pressed to open the locket, thus preventing it from opening unexpectedly and having the sponge fall out. State of the art for the time, I am sure! Please look closely at the photos as there is some wear to the silver plating and you can see the brass colored base metal in some places. The base metal may even be brass.whatever it is, the locket is non-magnetic. The locket is 2 1/4" in diameter. Other than the silver wear, this locket is in excellent condition. However, when I purchased it, there was no chain. The chain included here is a replacement. It is modern, 29" long and has an easy-to-fasten Lobster clasp. Very lovely vintage solid 14k yellow gold and onyx pendant in excellent condition. Featuring a 1"long inca deity pendant and 2 solid gold oval beads with gold spacers and onyx beads. Note the entire necklace weighs 58.8 grams but the gold itself weighs 28.7 grams guaranteed and has been professionally evaluated by a jeweller in weight. The base of the deity has a faint 14k marking. The inca deity is 3 dimensional and is 1/2"wide on the top. Onyx beads are 41 total inclusive of the smaller bead that is in between the slider pendant.
