I was told this is Rock Crystal however I cannot confirm this. This heavy and substantial necklace has 27 faceted beads ranging in size from 3/4" t o 1/2" and are all sep a rated by small 5mm crystal spacers. This beautiful necklace is from a neighbor and she asked us to sell it for her. She inherited it from her mother years ago and has loved it and worn it often. However. Now she feels its time to let it go to someone else who will also love it. Her mother got it sometime in the late 60's or early 70's in Arizona when she was touring the country in a truck and camper. She went from California to Washington D.C. Anyway. As you can see it is signed by H. Slim and from what we have been able to research, that would have probably been Helen Slim, a well known Navajo artist of that time period. Vintage Hand Made Fine Genuine Hawaiian Puka Shell Necklace
Vintage 1970's Hawaiian Puka Shell Necklace to start a new paragraph use- ❅Vintage 1970's hand made puka shell necklace. This was purchased out of a Southwestern estate(AZ) But the shells are Hawaiian. May have been strung by a Native American as it has an Indian Clasp instead of the typical barrel clasp. ❀A bit of history on pukas. Puka shells start out as cone shells and with original natural pukas. The sea, sand and sun turn them into natural beads. Tumbling in the ocean and sand they become little disks with holes in the center and the sun bleaches them white. Once these necklaces became very popular, shells that were not finished by nature were plucked from the shore and finished by man. When the pukas were gone, man harvested cone shells, ground, drilled and tumbled them. Then, other shells were used to make imitation pukas ... moreand finally plastic pukas were produced. Pukas were very popular in the 1970's but have been prized for 100's of years. Finding pukas of genuine cones shells is a challenge and finding pukas formed by nature is even more of a challenge. I am lucky to have a baggy full of natural puka shells that my sweetheart personally gathered on the beach in Hawaii in 1976. I use them for comparison in grading my vintage puka shell necklaces. I buy only genuine pukas, but will offer some that have human finishing. My prices reflect grade of shells. ❅These pukas are natural only tumbled by nature. I have inspected the holes with a 30X loupe and most of them are natural. On the ones that look like they may have been opened up with a drill. May have wear from riding on the wire on which they are strung. They have little holes and wear from sand. They are graded and well match in size from 9mm to 16mm in diameter. The shells are paired and strung beautifully in such a way that they look like beads. ❅It weighs 103 grams. ❅It is 17" long. ❅I have not cleaned or polished it and it has a lovely patina.
