Rare old vintage Zuni Leekya fetish leaf, bird and frog necklace
Here is a wonderful. Rare old Zuni fetish necklace, made by either master carver Leekya Deyuse or his daughter Sarah Leekya. Perhaps even both, as Sarah learned at her father's knee and for a time they made fetishes together. Although her father has passed on, Sarah is still alive, though she doesn't carve much any more. This sweet little necklace is strung on traditional sinew with silver lozenge. Bead and cone endings and a hook and eye fastening. The dark brown heishi are either shell or tortoise, which has not been used for at least the last forty years. Also on the necklace are orange spiney oyster and pearlshell beads. There are 15 fetishes in total, a turquoise leaf, six pedestal foot birds, two frogs and six flat birds. The birds are all different colored pearl shell(pink, white, banded, caramel and gold) and the frogs are ... moregreen serpentine. The necklace is a total of 21 1/2" long. And weighs nearly 1 1/2oz. This is a great estate find and I am unable to find anything even close to this item. It is from Germany and is of the Neuschwanstein Castle in the German Alps. It has the picture of the casle inside the fronet. And a beautiful silver colored starburst set in red on the other side. Honestly, this item truly looks to be hand-made. Even the"rope" around the heart looks to be hand twisted as it's not a perfect design. The heart itself is approximately 3/4" from top to bottom. The metal is of a gold color but, I know nothing of metalurgy so, your guess is as good as mine as to what it actually is. The sterling silver clasp is stamped'925' The necklace is made out of 7 large barrel shaped coral beads. 26 faux amber beads, and small disc shaped white stone spacer beads. The sterling and marcasite toggle clasp is later added. The coral is a natural sea coral. Not dyed, not treated. The coral beads are a medium pink/salmon color. The faux amber beads are made from an unkown material. Most likely some type of resin& some appear to be bakelite. They are semi transclucent, honey& cognac color, and most have swirls inside. The color combination of the beads is just charming. CONDITION: The necklace is in a great vintage condition.
