Tuned to scale 10 key tongue drum. In terrific shape(other than a small blemish in back) 18" long x 6" wide x 6.5" high. I'm not sure of the wood types used in the construction- sides appear to be red oak and the top a teak or African wood of some sort. Some folks use mallets that are just bouncy balls attached to the end of a wood stick- I can make some for you and include them if you want. The traditional way to play them is with bare hands. Antique Medical Collectibles: Wrapped Tongue Depressors, Pertussin, Glass Jar
Unique! I don't know when anyone will ever find another item like this one in their travels. Neat old four-sided 5-3/4" tall glass jar. Marked K. M. Quinlan, Inc. on the bottom, full of old, old wood tonque depressors. The jar is in perfect condition with a recessed bottom. It was originally made to have a lid but was apparently pressed into service as a holder for these depressors. The depressors were made by a company founded by Max Kade in 1907 called Seeck& Kade, Inc. that manufactured and distributed cough medicines, most notably Pertussin, and other pharmaceuticals. The trademark was no longer in existence around 1931 and Chesebrough Ponds acquired the company in 1956. Sixteen of the 22 depressors in the bottle are wrapped, and seem to be smaller than the others(child size? and the wrappers read: Seeck& Kade, New York ... moreon one side and Pertusssin for Asthma Bronchitis Coughs on the other. Four large ones are unwrapped and there are two additional ones that are unwrapped that appear to be a little larger than those that are wrapped. Most of the wrappers are intact but a couple of them have small tears simply from age. The wrappers are fairly fragile. Discolored and dusty. There is no damage to the unwrapped depressors other than age discoloration. These were acquired from a physician's widow's estate and I would date them to at least the 1930's or 1940's. Wonderful piece of history for a collector of medical pieces or for display in a lab setting. I have no idea of their storage history so I cannot guarantee that they have not been exposed to smoking/fragrance/cooking odors or pets. This is an estate item and is being sold as is. The giant eagle on the tongue disc has lightning bolts in its talons. It is c.1825-1832 and is gilted. Which is why I saw it is for an artillery officer. Infantry officer's buckles were silvered during this time period. It is cast and die struck and bench assembled. The belt loop bar has two slash benchmarks. It is a neat early tongue. It is bright yellow bakelite(it may not show up that bright in the pictures since for some reason yellow bakelite always comes out looking pale and whitish in our photographs. But it is definitely bright yellow bakelite) We know bakelite well and have sold it for a long time, and we guarantee this piece to be authentic bakelite and also a vintage item. It measures 6-13/16 inches long X 15/16 inch wide and has a slight convexity to each side as you can see in the pictures. It has quite a bit of scratching on the surface, this piece was obviously used a great deal and for many years. There are a few tiny fleabites along the sides but they are so tiny that you only can feel them when you run your fingernail along the ridge, ... morethey are not at all obvious.
