My World Now Auction: Blonder-Tongue BT-70 Ampliverter UHF CONVERTER Working! Blonder-Tongue made an awful lot of UHF converters in this bakelite cabinet. This particular model is a bit rarer. Since it only covers channels 70-83, the so-called"translator channels. The circuit is the same as the BTU-2 series, with a 6AF4 oscillator, a 6AB4 IF amplifier, and a 1N62 diode mixer. The extra IF amplification was needed in translator service because of the lower power and limited range of the transmitters. A selenium rectifier provdes the high voltage DC for the tubes. Channels 70-83 were set aside by the FCC only a few years after the UHF band was created. Since full-power operation at these very high frequencies was proving difficult and expensive for the fledgling TV stations. The channels were assigned to a"translator" service- ... morestations(sometimes unmanned or part-time) that would re-broadcast another channel's signals into remote, sparsely-populated, or terrain-blocked areas of the country. Their function was meant to be of limited range, and temporary or for expediency, not to replace a full-service TV station. Higher-power UHF(and VHF) stations eventually eliminated the need for many translator stations, and the rise of cellular phones caused the FCC to move the remaining translator stations in 1982. Since then, channels 70-83 have been"land mobile" radio rather than TV frequencies. My World Now. Original Dug Ca. 1850s Militia 2 pc. Tongue & Wreath Eagle Belt Buckle
These two-piece tongue and wreath militia belt buckles were used from the 1850s into the Civil War period. They were apparently used by both Northern and Southern militias. And have been found on many Civil War battlefields. They are rarely recovered complete with both pieces, and in undamaged condition. I purchased this one in the 1960s from the man who found it using a metal detector. It was dug from behind the site of a hotel and bar on the main street of Timbuctoo. An 1850s gold rush town on the Yuba River in Northern California. Interestingly, it was found near a sheriff's badge. The buckle is made of die stamped sheet brass. It has no signs of corrosion damage from being in the ground, The American eagle and shield have some loss of detail on the highlights that appears to be from wear. The finely lined background of the circular ... moresection is still crisp and clear, as are the details of the eagle's tail feathers, branches and arrows and outer areas of the wings. There is a coppery, medium dark patina. I have not cleaned the buckle, and the reverse has dirt and greenish tarnish remaining. There are no bends, cracks or other defects. I doubt that you will find a better dug example of this buckle. I guarantee that it is original and as described. Rare Original Dug Militia Eagle Belt Buckle Tongue Ca. 1850s - N.Y. Maker Marked
I bought this dug tongue section of an 1850s militia tongue and wreath belt buckle. In the 1960s. It is made of sheet brass and depicts a die stamped, raised, early style American eagle with a shield on its breast. Around the outer edge of the circle, in raised lettering is the maker's name, Wetzlar& Taussig* New York* That company appears in the 1856 New York Directory. They were suppliers to military units and miners headed for the California gold rush. The surface of the attached 1/2" x 2" belt loop is covered with finely stamped horizontal lines. The total width of the piece is 1 7/8" The diameter of the round section is approximately 1 3/16" Although it was dug, all of the fine details of the lettering, eagle feathers, shield, etc. remain sharp and clear. I have not cleaned the buckle. There is a hint of the ... moreoriginal gold finish on the face of the bar connecting the belt loop. Otherwise the face has only a light uneven patina with some darker spots and greenish and coppery tarnish. The reverse side shows some copper color tarnish and light, greenish surface corrosion. It is very desirable to find maker marked military buckles from this period, especially in this excellent dug condition. Antique "POLICE" Tongue and Wreath Belt Plate
Antique"POLICE" Tongue and Wreath Belt Plate This is a great example of an early POLICE Tongue and Wreath belt plate. Most likely this belt plate was made shortly after the Civil War and is of the common style of tongue and wreath belt plates used during the Civil War. The Tongue portion of the plate is convex with"POLICE" in raised letters on a stippled background. The Wreath portion of the plate has the typical laurel and ribbon design. The plate when attached measures approximately 65 mm wide by 50 mm high at the belt loop. Condition This is a used plate but in overall good condition. The plate shows some wear. The butter press is in really nice condition. Just some wonderful craftsmanship in the construction of this one. Now when you look at the craving in the press it might explain why this press looks to have seen little if any use. This is just a guess. But I think this is a father son project for mom. All the details of this press are exact. The corner work, the way the handle is turned to fit perfectly flush with the top(looks like a button on top) the carved blades of grass. Then you get to the cow. It had to have been a child that carved it. Looks like dad tried to dress it up a bit with his work on the horns ears and tail.
