It is preserved and fixed with a non-toxic. Museum grade fixative and will not decay. US Postal regulations prohibit me from shipping in alcohol. The specimen will be shipped moist. And buyer will need to add alcohol to glass jar. Isopropyl or ethyl alcohol work fine and are available at any grocery store or pharmacy. Whitall Tatum specimen jar with iron wheel closure pontil
Offered for auction is a Whitall Tatum specimen jar with original glass lid and huge iron wheel clamp closure. The closure is very thick and strong. And functions smoothly. It even retains some of its original black paint. The jar is tall. Almost 8 inches without the lid and 9.5 inches to the top of the closure. The volume is roughly a pint. The glass insert has two fins on the bottom with holes to hang a specimen in suspension for display. The bottom of the jar has a pontil scar and the top has a ground lip in good condition. Offered for auction is a Whitall Tatum Specimen Jar. The jar measures 7" tall to the top of the lid. The bottom diameter is 6" and the top diameter for the opening is 5 1/2" The jar has a pontil mark on the bottom which would indicate it was hand blown. The lid has some small chips around the rim. I recently acquired a large collection of these jars ranging from 3-6” tall and from 1.5-3.5” in diameter. All the jars are unmarked but originally came from the Smithsonian Museum in DC and were most likely made in the early 1900’s. They are all hand blown glass and many have little glass hooks on the underside of the block top glass lids allowing specimen to be hung inside the jars. I will be listing these jars individually and in small lots in the coming weeks. You are bidding on the pictures jar/lot. I tried to take good pictures so condition could accurately be judged. Each jar is unique and even similar sizes vary slightly from one jar to the next. Jars ... morewere handmade and are very old and they may include small flea bites and imperfections in the glass. You are bidding on a wonderful RARE ANTIQUE WHITALL TATUM GLASS SPECIMEN JAR& CLAMP LID. This jar is AWESOME. It is one of the largest of this type I have seen at 18" tall not including the clamp. It is beautiful wavy glass with natural imperfections. The lid is embossed WHITALL TATUM PHILADELPHIA& NEW YORK. The jar has a nice pontil scar on the base(photo 7) evidence of the hand blown nature of the jar. The cast iron clamp works perfectly. Rare 1890's Whitall Tatum & Co. Hand Blown Glass Specimen Jar Vintage Apothecary
This listing is for a rare Whitall Tatum and Co. hand-blown glass specimen jar. This item is sold AS IS. The jar dates from between 1898 and 1901 and is hand-blown soda lime glass. The glass has natural imperfections including a few small bubbles and slight waviness in the sides of the glass due to natural thickness variation. The bottom of the jar has a slight mark where the punty was attached during the jar's fabrication. The top flange also has a slight fold where it was attached to the jar body. The inner lip of the flange is ground glass. As seen in the pictures. The lid of the jar reads WHITALL.TATUM& Co PHILADELPHIA NEW YORK. The lid also has two small hand-blown hooks from which specimens can be suspended. Both the jar and lid have no chips. Cracks, clouding or damage. This jar does not include the metal screw clamp.
