Please note the outer cardboard sleeve is slightly worn Pachyrhinosaurus lakustai was first discovered in 1972 by a science teacher from Grande Prairie. Alberta named Al Lakusta. In what would prove a significant discovery, Lakusta located the dinosaurs in a rich bed of prehistoric bones at Pipestone Creek, Alberta. The bonebed is perched on the steep wall of a valley carved through bedrock, exposing strata of the Wapiti Formation. When the area was finally excavated in 1986, paleontologists from the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology in Drumheller, Alberta, were amazed to find an enormous wealth of bones. Some areas of the site averaged 100 ... morebones per square meter. The Pachyrhinosaurus lakustai herd that these researchers ultimately uncovered is a species of ceratopsid(or horned dinosaur) from North America's Late Cretaceous period. These formidable beasts were up to 8 metres(26 feet) long and weighed up to four tons. The most distinctive feature of this amazing beast is its massive head. Which is dominated by large bony structures called'bosses' above the nose and eyes(Pachyrhinosaurus means'thick-nosed lizard' and a hefty frill of bone on the back of its skull festooned with small horns. It is one of the HARDER TO FIND- Extra SMALL SIZE FRACTIONAL NOTES. The 1874 $.25 US NOTE from the Fifth Issue. In FINE condition in my opinion. But you can judge for yourself to make the final decision with the photos above, which you can enlarge. It has the of small portrait of Robert J. Walker. Who was Secretary of the Treasury from 1845-1849. It was issued in 1874 while U.S. Grant was the President. In the years of the US Civil War starting in 1862 there was a critical shortage of coins. It became such a problem that for 14 years the government issued small size notes called FRACTIONAL CURRENCY. The note is firm. Fairly clean and still a good looking ... morelittle note despite its age, with 4 full corners and it has good color contrast. There are 6 tiny pin holes, soiling and largely intact edges with one tiny 1/8" internal split. This is a nice note, especially for a fractional note which are often very worn out when they are found. These were used in stead of coins so saw plenty of use in trade and commerce following the Civil War. Nice for display. The art work is simple and the note is less than one third that of modern notes. Book value is $27.50 in this condition. $65 in CU. So place a bid and enjoy a bargain. Some retailers and Shop at Home TV charge much more that book value for this note when they can find it. This note often sells for well over book value even on Ebay! So if you need it to add something special to your currency collection this may be just the opportunity. Don't let it slip by.
