One hand in a white fur muff. And the other holding a small decorated Christmas Tree. She is standing on a cloud. What an outstanding image. Three large silver tinsel loops. Silver tinsel sprays on top left and right. Red gelatin strips still intact. Best of all. It is double-sided. But the most fabulous of all are the two wax stains from a lighted candle on the tree. VERMONT LADDER BACK PADDLE POCKER CIRCA 1780 For sale is this rare Circa 1780 Vermont ladder back paddle arm rocker in oak and maple with an oak splint seat. The chair shows a certain Shaker influence and has descended down within an East Farley Vermont family. It has turned ball finial posts. Original telescoping front supports with thick re-enforcement dowels under each arm. The chair is assembled with fine pegged joinairy. The rocker has obviously been repainted black and has had its seat re-built about 50 years ago when it was painted. Under the black paint it has a very strong original red wash paint. We purchased this with the hopes of having some spare time to restore this piece and remove the newer coat of black paint. Reality has changed our plans. Nevertheless, this remains a wonderfully rare New England treasure. We have seen a ... morevery small handful of these over the last 40 years. Manam Island. Madang Province, Papua New Guinea A Manam Island"Tate" pronounced tete) step ladder fragment. These were once quite commonly used on Manam. And are unique to this region. Carved from the side of large old ocean going canoes, of which there are none these days, with the Islanders preferring to travel by dinghy. This example is truly ancient and has seen generations of use, as you can tell by the incredibly smooth edges where one would have gripped and the soft rounded surface of the steps. Once a step longer; with the bottom step long gone, the Tate then remained in use until I collected it on a recent field trip. These are incredibly rare these days, with many of the beautiful things on Manam destroyed in a recent volcanic eruption, and the Islanders now living scattered along the mainland coast in squalid"Care ... morecentres" Heavily weathered smooth patina; circa 19th Century, in excellent condition. 1899 Harris Portable Steel Ladder Fire Escape with Signed Tag and Case Very Rare
A very rare 1899 Harris fire escape ladder with the original tag signed on the back 4-4-1900_ Harris. I can't make out the first intial of the name(see picture 11, part of the tag is missing) 3 US Patents January 17, 1899. This is the first one I have ever come across, it has the ornamental copper or brass case that was meant to be attached under the window sill with the ladder inside. The ladder is steel cable and steel rungs which appear to be in good shape with only surface rust. It measures approximately 16.75" long and 10" tall. and weighs almost 20 lbs. It has surface rust, the copper or brass case is missing one end, and it has only one keeper wheel on the ladder but it is still quite useable. Notice the tall, elongated ears on the chairs and the beautifully carved splats. The seats are low and are actually the same height as in a smaller chair, pictured. The back is a total of 47 inches high; 34" above the seat. The seat is 16" from the floor(measured from an inclined position) 15" deep, 19" across. The rockers are 28" long. RARE Antique 1875 Pewter Tag Bangor Extension Ladder Co Maine Fire Invention
From the information I was able to garner from an online reprint of an article in a 1988 issue of Firemaniacs. The Bangor Ladder was invented by"Major James M. Davis, a joiner from Bangor, Maine" and Civil War veteran. Davis(in 1874 from a different source) designed the Bangor ladder in an effort to solve the major downfall of most lengthy ladders at the time- their tendency to fail under stress because the solid, wooden beams. would sag and break. Single ladders(non-extension) were out of favor because of their great weight. Long, heavy tormentor poles were used in the early days to help raise the long ladders. but carried separately. Davis is credited with being the first person to develop an extension ladder with permanently attached tormentor poles that would fit flush to the ladder while stored on the truck. When needed at ... morea fire the poles would easily swing out to assist in lifting the ladder as well as stabilize the ladder once in place. immediate hit with firefighters in the greater Bangor area. However it was General Joseph Smith, a Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor winner, that saw the value of Davis' ladder for a nation that was increasingly building upwards with taller and taller buildings. The General purchased Davis' interest in the ladder and set up the Bangor Extension Ladder Co. By 1890 hundreds of the Bangor Ladders were in service in most major cities. New York City purchased 200 while both Boston and Chicago had at least 50 ladders in service. Shortly after 1900 however the company went out of business after more than 25 years. From another source: General Smith's purchase was in 1875 in which year he took out a patent for the ladder. Also: Received the Centennial Medal at the 1876 Philadelphia Exhibition. I believe this is a rare tag of historic importance to the history of firefighting. This is a nickel plated pewter tag measuring about 2" x 4" Free insured shipping.
