This vintage brass fire hose nozzle came from my husband's family. I am sorry. But I have no history on it. It is being sold as found and it could use cleaning. It measures approximately 4 1/2" high. At the threaded open bottom. It is about 2" in diameter. The top area with the screw is about 1 3/16" across. There is a part inside. I do not know what it is for. I couldn't seem to capture a photo of it and I'm not sure you can make it out in the photos. I would imagine you collectors would know what it is. There is a number on the lower part which is a bit hard to read. But I think it is: U 212-65. I don't know if there is more to that but I couldn't tell. VINTAGE PISTOL GRIP ADJ FIRE HOSE NOZZLE, POWHATAN BRASS AND IRON WORKS, 1 1/2"
This item is a two part adjustable brass(chrome plated) fire hose nozzle made by Powhatan Brass and Iron Company(no longer exists as an independent company) It is in good. Used shape, and is fully functional. It is relatively heavy at about 8 pounds. The pieces are 1 1/2" standard size fire department size, and consist of a nozzle and a pistol grip accessory. The nozzle is a continuosly adjustable spray with detentes for several angle settings through a full stream flush setting, with a ball valve(lever controlled) for on and off action. The pistol grip is an intermediate piece between the hose and the nozzle for greater control and ease in use. When a small fire department in California bought this valve a significant number of years ago, the piece cost over $1300, and this level of expense 30 or 40 years ago makes this a rather rare ... morepiece of equipment today. Both parts are stamped with the Powhatan Brass and Iron trademark/name. There may be use marks or other flaws that have to do with age and use that one can reasonably expect-any major flaws that I detect will be descibed. All items are sold AS/IS. Great image of two HOSE 1 fire fighters in their parade uniforms and unique hats. Looking very cocky with their hands on their hips. I do not have any knowledge regarding antique photography and the various types of images. I do not know if this is a tin type or an ambrotype. With that said, look at the pics. I had a tough time getting pics without reflections. I do not want to take apart this frame to examine the image because I don’t know how it is put together and I don’t want to damage anything. The case is 3 ¾ x 4 5/8ths. The image looks like it is in great condition; I see some wrinkles in the upper left. I was told this is pre-civil war. The case has some minor wear but it is sound. THE FIRE ASSOCIATION WAS AN INSURANCE COMPANY THAT INSURED HOMES AGAINST FIRES IN THE 1800'S. FIRE MARKS WERE PLACED ON THE HOUSES TO INDICATE WHO WAS INSURED BY WHAT COMPANY. THIS IS A REPRODUCTION. THE OVAL IRON PLAQUE HAS THE RAISED IMAGE OF A FIRE HYDRANT WITH ATTACHED HOSE. FLANKED BY THE LETTERS F.A. IT IS SIGNED ON THE BACK, FIRE ASSN. OF PHILA. THE SIGN IS CONVEX, MEASURING 10 5/8" LONG BY 6 3/4" WIDE. THE COLORS ARE GOLD AND GREEN. IT IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A LITTLE WEAR TO THE GOLD PAINT. VINTAGE BRASS AKRON 2.5" FIRE HOSE NOZZLE W/ FOGGER, HOSE COUPLE, & BALL VALVE
FOR AUCTION A very nice 2.5" Akron solid brass fire nozzle. The nozzle is complete including the fogger tip and a hose coupler which is shown attached to the nozzle. The ball valve is intact. LEATHER FIRE HOSE, COPPER RIVETS, 1870
In 1807 a major advance in fire hose was made by two American firemen from Philadelphia's Hose Company 1 who experimented by using metal rivets instead of stitching to bind the seams of leather hose. Their efforts paid off and became a huge success. Leather hose still had many drawbacks. Including drying out, cracking and bursting from excessive pressure. The introduction of rivets, however, allowed higher pressures and greater delivery of water on the fire ground. The improved hose now was 40 to 50 feet in length and weighed more than 85 pounds with the couplings. The next improvement came in 1821. When James Boyd received a patent for rubber-lined, cotton-webbed fire hose. By 1871, the Cincinnati Fire Department was using the B.F. Goodrich Company's new rubber hose reinforced with cotton ply. So as you can see. Leather fire hose ... morewas being phased out by the 1870s, over 140 years ago. This piece is in great condition and belongs in a museum. It is a little over 12” long with copper rivets. No cracks or other damage. This leather hose has been sold for over $100 a foot in the past. This length is still pliable. It is brown; I don’t know why it has a greenish tinge in some pictures. Please see pics and ask questions you may have about this exceptional piece of firefighting history. 5 LARGE VINTAGE ANTIQUE SOLID BRASS FIRE HOSE NOZZLES
They all have their gaskets in place except one. The gasket came out during cleaning and I couldn't get it back in. So it is loose but will come with the nozzle. It is believed these nozzles were used in the Pinelands of New Jersey. Shipping is based on a 9lb package. Please double check your shipping costs with usps.com using my 08015 zip code.
