ANTIQUE BRASS GONG/BELL FOR HAND PULLED FIRE HOSE CART
This is an antique bell for a hand pulled fire hose cart. The bell is made of brass and frame is steel and it is 11" in diameter and weighs 16 lbs. I have pictures from the Minneapolis Firefighters Museum that show a 1899 Waterous hose cart with a very similar bell. This type of bell would have been attached to the axle of the hose cart along with an activator attached to the wheel itself. Every time the wheel turned. The activator would ring the bell. This was an early siren that would alert pedestrians that the fire department was coming down the street. It also assisted the fireman as they didn't have to keep yelling"get the hell out of the way" This is missing the bottom of the axle mounting bracket and the activator. At some time in the past, a hole was frilled through lever that extends from the bottom of the bell. ... moreThis is the piece that came in contact with the activator. I would guess that was done so the bell could be manually operated or that it would prevent the lever from hitting the activator on every wheel rotation. On a long run, I imagine that the bell ringing could get old. If you have a an antique hose cart that need that extra something this might be the piece. Rumor) was also that its pressure could cut a person in two. Made by the US Rubber Company this Nozzle is 10" long. 2 1/2" Bottom and a 7/8" tip. Fantastic Patina with wear and Damage from use. Offering at no reserve a vintage Elkhart Brass Mfg. Fire Hose for use by occupants of buildings" Found at a local sale. It appears to be complete and undamaged. I have no way of testing it though. It has a brass nozzle and the female coupler looks to be about 1 1/2' on the inside. It has the tags on it and an inspection tag, please look at all the pictures carefully. This is a Vintage American Lafrance Foamite Corp. Brass Fire Hose Nozzle Model 10 E- 30" Long. It measures approximately 30 3/8 inches long with the nozzle screwed in and 30 3/4 inches long with the nozzle screwed out. It is very heavy. Appears to be solid brass with some kind of rope material on the wrapped mid section. It has the word UNDERWRITER inprinted on the wrapped material. Overall it is in very good condition. I did notice a couple of little dings and dents- a couple in the main body and one on the end nozzle- nothing major though. There is some stamping on the end of the nozzle that says CLEV 32632. Auctioned"As-Is" in need of restoration or display as found. 48" diam steel wheels and spokes(16) spokes have been replaced many years ago with a slightly heavier diameter spoke. 4) spokes are bent and(1) has broken loose from the rim. Steel rims are heavily rusted and pitted especially where the cart has sat on damp ground(approx 14" of each rim is poor) Handle has some rusted out holes on one side, cart still turns freely and wheels can be removed for storage.
