Antique Student Microscope with Box & Slide Cover Glasses
This nice old microscope was most likely made for school use. There are no manufacturer's markings but the base and table are both stamped with a 13. I assume those were the school serial numbers for keeping track of the unit.The optics are clean and work well and the brass is polished but has a nice patina. The black paint is in good condition as is the gold painted base. Included is a nearly full box of 3/4 inch glass cover glasses that date back to 1952. The story of this microscope is as follows: In 1952. When I was eleven I wandered into a shop called The Beverly Trading Post on Cabot Street in Beverly Massachusetts. It was one of those old time junk shops that bought and sold used things of value and run by a curmudgeon who apparently rejoiced in scarring kids. But I was not to be deterred, for I wanted that microscope that was ... morein the window. Now as it turned out, I had some small fish in a large mayonnaise jar; or rather I had fish. They had all died several weeks before, so what I now had was very black smelly water. I put a drop of that water on a slide and dropped on a cover glass and took a look. My fish were gone but I had something better. I had millions of single celled swimming things. I had entered the world of real science, and I have never looked back. Now it's time for some other curious kid to be nudged onto that world. Why not do it with a microscope that is made of metal and glass and will last for many lifetimes.

Dated 1858. And signed with the preparer's initials. Handcut, slightly irregular, rough-edged glass slide. Specimen description is diamond cut into the slide: Transverse Section of the stem of a White water lily- in the air cells of which can be seen a large stellate hair-like body(Gly) The last comment means that the specimen was mounted in glycerin jelly. The stellate hair-like structures can be seen in the accompanying photomicrographs. There has been some loss of mountant after 150+ years. But the specimen is still very clear. Vnt Antique Bausch & Lomb Optical Co Brass Metal Slide Microscope Rochester N. Y
For your consideration from a smoke free estate. A truly wonderful piece of vintage optical equipment. I am going to do my best to describe this antique brass microscope. But as I am not an expert by any means in this area please forgive any incorrect terminolgy. Any questions or information is all welcomed and appreciated. This microscope is made of brass and black metal. All we have done is to dust this piece. So the brass. Although warm appears scratched. It looks really retro as it is. But I would think if you wanted to use it you would need to shine it up. I leave the cleaning of these valuable older treasures to the experts. The base is black and measures 5 1/2" longest) 3 3/4" widest) Base does have minimal surface rust(photo 7) and a screw that does turn. I think this screw may tighten the base into place. Back of base has ... morea round metal plate that I think is brass. It reads: Bausch& Lomb Optical Rochester N.Y. New York City. The Bausch is a little hard to read. The mirror rotates and swings freely. The mirror measures 1 3/4" across. The metal around one side of the the mirror has some age rust(photo 7) One side of the mirror magnifies the other is just regular mirror. The mirror side that does not magnify has some silver loss around the edge(see photo 7) this does not seem to effect the visiblity. The mirror will be removed for shipping as to decrease the risk of breakage. The area that holds the slides is black, the two slide holders are intact with good movement and I think they are brass. The opening in slide stage is 1/2" The underside of the slide plate has a circular dial I believe brass piece. This circular dial has 4 holes, I think they are used to regulate the light that reaches the mirror. This dial moves freely and the largest opening measures 1/2" across. The microscope raises up and down without problems but may need to be lubricated. At the tallest it is 14" retracted 11" The piece closest to the slide stage is marked: Bausch& Lomb 16 mm 0.25 N.A. T

This slide holder w/ slides and extras came from the estate of a former Dartmouth MD. Central Scientific Co. Boston, Mass. There are 100 slots for slides. And included are 84 slides, which include chicken, human, cat, dog, monkey, frog, rat(possibly others) The samples are varied from embryos, to liver tissue, pituitary glands, stomach, tongue, spinal cord, etc. The box measures approx. 7.5" X 8.5" when closed. The closure is metal clasps. The bottom of the box is delicately attached(unnattached on bottom edge and half on sides. Up for bid is an extremely rare R& J Beck London Micrometer slide. On the front of the slide it reads Micrometer 1/100 of an Inch 1/1000 of an inch R& J Beck london. It is a card slide and not glass. It looks like the slide was not used with no handwritten markings on it. I've included pictures of both sides. Some pictures have flash issues from the camera I was using. This is an extremely rare slide from the 1800's in excellent condition.
