Harbour Lights Retired. Christmas 2000 Includes Commemorative Coin Low Number Hereford Inlet. New Jersey Information about the Lighthouse: Hereford Inlet. Lying directly between the mouth of the Delaware Bay and Great Egg Harbor. Became an inviting waterway to fishermen and transport vessels. A small island, located prominently at the entrance of the inlet made for the perfect location for a small fishing village. In 1849, local fishermen started a life-saving station in Anglesca(now North Wildwood) directly on the spot where Hereford Inlet lighthouse now stands, to rescue passengers on troubled fishing vessels. In 1872. Congress authorized funds for a lighthouse to be constructed on the island. The Army Corps of Engineers built a charming Victorian lighthouse, complete with five fireplaces and several rooms. This combination structure includes ... moreboth the keeper's quarters and a tower containing a fourth order Fresnel lens. After lighting the beacon in 1874. Officials commissioned John Nick as the first lightkeeper. He served only three months when his boat capsized in the inlet, causing him to drown in the frigid waters. A second keeper, John Murch served four years. In 1878, Captain Freeling H. Hewitt took charge, filling the whale oil and winding the clock mechanism every four hours each night for the next 40 years. In 1913 a violent storm carved out a new coastline on the island and undermined the foundation of the lighthouse. The entire structure was moved 150 feet West. The building was abandoned in 1964 when the optic was moved by the Coast Guard to a nearby skeletal tower. In 1982, the City of North Wildwood leased the lighthouse from the Coast Guard and began a restoration project that returned the lighthouse to it's 19th century appearance. In 1986. The Coast Guard relocated the optic to the lighthouse tower. Today the lighthouse includes a museum and gift shop and again serves as an active aid to navigation. RANKIN INLET CARIBOU INUIT WALL HANGING
Wonderful genuine Caribou Inuit wall hanging. The wall hangings crafted by the Inuit always tell a story. This fine piece depicts the Inuit of the Arctic hunting. Once known as the Thule. They became the modern Caribou Inuit, hunting smaller sea mammals on the sea ice in the winters on the coast and migrating inland to hunt caribou in the summer. The Thule, before the late 1700s depended on hunting for large whales. This wall hanging brings the two seasons together. At the bottom of the piece is an Inuit figure hunting a sea mammal. Above this activity is an Inuit women crafting part of the day's catch into a purse, clothing, etc. The Inuit women sits on a pelt of caribou. At the bottom of this wall hanging is a 3" fringe of caribou as well. The detail on this piece is exceptional, adorned with rich yellows, greens, tans, and reds. ... moreThe woman's hair is actually braided, then stitched onto the hanging. The stitchery on this is so detailed in various methods, even creating hands and hair. I am not sure of the date of this piece,however the woman's green coat has a few small hole marks which appears as a short union with a moth! The hanging's background is a deep navy blue color. The entire piece measures 13" X 25" There is a strung thin round wood piece inserted on top for hanging. There is a very old tag attached to this wall hanging stating"RANKIN INLET" in print and written in long hand: Area 20037-EDKX" Rankin Inlet is notable for the chilling wind. Severe winter storms, and water resources. These natural resources attract tourists who hunt, fish, and canoe. Rankin Inlet is not only notable for its artists and artisans, it is recognized as housing the only Inuit fine-arts ceramics production facility in the world. The Matchbox Gallery, founded in 1987, showcases their art work. Several Caribou Inuit groups are the ancestors of the Inuit who live in the Kivalliq communities today.

Description: A fine example of the U.S. Coast survey map of Oregon Inlet. N. Carolina. The map covers the inlet as well as parts of Bodie Island, Pea Island, and Duck Island. This inlet, located on North Carolina's Outer Banks, provides access to the Pamlico Sound from the Atlantic Ocean. Apparently a hurricane in 1846 separated the islands. A ship name the Oregon rode out the storm on Pamlico Sound and was the first to report the new inlet, thus immortalizing itself in the region's geography. When this map was made, the southern island, today's Pea Island, was as yet unnamed and so both islands are here identified as'Bodie Island' Studying this pass on Google Earth will reveal ... morea remarkable change in the regional topography as over 100 years of storm has moved the inlet southwards over 2 miles since its original formation. Storms in 1848 opened Hatteras and Oregon Inlet, lessening the vital importance of Ocracoke Inlet by providing alternate access points to the Pamlico Sound. The triangulation upon which these charts were based is the work of A. S. Wadsworth. The topography for these charts was compiled by J. Mechan. The hydrography was accomplished by a party under the command of William T. Muse. Size: Printed area measures 19 inches high by 29 inches wide. Condition: Very good. Some wear and toning on original fold lines. Minor repair upper right fold intersection. Some additional wear and creasing to left and right of main fold. Backed on archival tissue for stability. Off Hatteras Inlet. It was published in Harper's Weekly. February 15, 1862. A powerful northeaster storm struck the mid-Atlantic coast between 12 and 15 January 1862. The Burnside Expedition fleet confronted strong winds and warm weather as it rounded Cape Henry bound for Hatteras Inlet. Ships thus sailed independently to Hatteras in face of the storm. And ships arrived at Hatteras at various times beginning 12 January. The 600-ton screw steamer City of New York arrived outside Hatteras Inlet the morning of 12 January, but waited at sea for a persistent fog to clear. The seas and winds grew rougher ... moreand stronger, and the steamer struck a shoal fifteen times trying to cross the bar. Vintage Steelhead Blowout Dec. 20. 1987 Hat This is a vintage commemorative hat from the first blowout of the Steelhead gas well in Cook Inlet. Alaska in 1987. This hat was purchased in 1987. Labeled one size fits all. It is light gray with a sewn on patch with a picture of the well in black with that an orange, red and blue background. Above the well it says, Steelhead Blowout Dec. 20, 1987 Platform" in black. Great condition. No tears or marks. From non-smoking home. Here is some general information about the blowout: Rig: Steelhead Platform Date: 20 Dec 1987 Location: Cook Inlet. Alaska Operator: Marathon The Marathon-owned Steelhead Platform suffered a natural gas blowout whilst drilling well M-26 in the McArthur River Field. The crew were setting casing when gas from a shallow gas pocket began to flow from the well. Attempts were ... moremade to kill the well with drilling mud but the gas unfortunately ignited. Leading to a fire which caused extensive damage to the drilling package. The fire burned out of control for a week before the well bridged and extinguished the fire. The forty-nine crew on board managed to evacuate the rig without serious injuries via the lifeboats. The fire destroyed the helideck and damaged the accommodation module. The drilling module and one of the cranes. Problems with the well continued and, in the following six months, the well blew out twice more before being brought under control, delaying the start of production by a number of months. The platform was later repaired, allowing the resumption of drilling and production.
