Check has been completely made out and signed by General Tibbets in blue ink and is in FINE condition. On August 6th. 1945 Colonel Paul W. Tibbets, of the 509th Bomber Group and pilot of the Enola Gay, received his orders and in the early morning hours roared down a runway bound for Hiroshima. The B-29 Superfortress lifted off Tinian Island at 2:45AM for the six and one half hour flight to Hiroshima. At 31,600 feet, with a ground speed of 328 m.p.h. a bomb weighing 9,700 pounds, containing 137.5 pounds of Uranium 235 was released. The firebomb that erupted was equivalent of thirteen thousand tons of TNT and thousands of degrees hotter than the surface of the sun. The letter has a very minor marking of a paper clip on the top center area, otherwise is in fine condition. James Smith McDonnell was born in Denver. Colo. April 9, 1899. He grew up in Little Rock, Ark. where his father, also named James McDonnell, was a successful cotton merchant and ran a general store. Every morning before school, young James S. McDonnell delivered copies of the Arkansas Gazette on horseback. He graduated from Little Rock High School in 1917, just as World War I broke out. McDonnell served briefly as a private in the Army and then attended Princeton University, from which he graduated with honors in physics in 1921. While in college, he joined the Reserve Officers Training ... moreCorps(ROTC) After Princeton, he enrolled at Massachusetts Institute of Technology for graduate studies in aeronautical engineering. While still at MIT, he continued his ROTC affiliation, passed the Army Air Service physical and passed much of the ground-school work required for pilots. In August 1923, McDonnell was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army Air Service Reserve and assigned to Brooks Field, Texas, for flight training. He graduated from MIT in 1925. After earning his pilot's wings, McDonnell spent a year as a"gypsy pilot, doing odd jobs for people who owned airplanes. Finally, he landed a job as aeronautical engineer and pilot with Huff Doland Airplane Co. in Ogdensburg, NY and subsequently a stress analyst and draftman with the Consolidated Aircraft Company of Buffalo, NY in 1924-1925. In April 1927, he heard about a competition offered by the Guggenheim Foundation for the design of a safe, light, training aircraft. Very interesting WWII German Marriage Registry Document for French Citizen issued on March 2nd. 1937. Addressed to the French Government, written French with German stamping at the end. Unfortunately, I don't read French, but it looks unusual and interesting. Legal size, overall in good shape for age. Little bit of tattering on top with 2 punch holes and old paper clip indentation& rust mark. Also there is some german writing on the left of the typed text(Stempel marke) it is written recently(not sure why) 100% original except the modern day writing. US shipping only. I was lucky enough to buy this a couple of years ago(just the paper- the gun had been sold years before. I have to imagine that even the stamp is rare. I have owned three stamps in my years of collecting junk, but this is the only that was still attached to the form, most had been ripped off the paperwork. Average selling price for one of these varies between $50-250 loose, this one has to be worth a lot more as it is still on the paperwork, but I am going to do one better. Does have the name“Sands” in ink on front. But still shows well. Pouch is 11 ½” tall. 9 ½” wide and about 3” thick. It has two clips on back for attaching to the vehicle and a strap below that can be secured also. Top has a carry handle for when it is moved out of the vehicle. I’m not sure of all the vehicles this would have been used in(in fact I’m not 100% certain it’s a vehicle pouch. Jr. was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on 26 January 1909 to Joseph W. and Mrs. Clara B. Robinson) Leverton. He graduated from Central High School in Washington D.C. in 1927, and entered the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland, from the Third Maryland District on 5 July 1927. He graduated 222nd out of 444 midshipmen in the Class of 1931 on 4 June 1931 after serving as the Bugle Corps commander. His first assignment was aboard USS Augusta(CA-31) While that cruiser operated with the Atlantic, Pacific, and Asiatic Fleets. In 1935, as Turret Officer, he won the Secretary of the Navy award with the highest score of the year for all 8-inch gun turrets. On 10 July 1936, he reported aboard USS Tucker(DD-374) then building at Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Virginia. Lieutenant(junior grade) Leverton served as the First Lieutenant on Tucker from her commissioning on 23 July 1936 to 1 June 1938.
