I found that tying flies while dreaming of fishing was one of the best ways to wind down after a rough day at work. Life has intervened and now that I no longer fish, I need to pass some of this stuff on. This is a nice rooster 1/2 saddle in a nondescript general purpose dun color that I never really got around to using. I was never much of a fly tier. I mean. I was interested and all, I just spent most of my time practicing patterns using the cheap China and India necks, intending to use these better materials when my skills improved. I bought this saddle in 2001, just never got good enough, you could say. I doubt that I used 10 feathers ... moreoff of this skin. Probably closer to 2, FWIW. Whiting farms is an industry leader in breeding top notch roosters for dry fly feathers. And grades their feathers according to how many flies a given skin will yield. Their conservative( estimate for a 1/2 silver is 400. That's a LOT of flies! Also notice the old price tag of $26. Now that people are no longer using these as hair extensions(Thank god! the price of good hackle has come back down, but it still ain't no $26! Cabella's sells these in a 100's pack, a dozen feathers or so, for $25. This 1/2 saddle would be closer to 50-75 feathers, and up to 10" long with very little taper. Ahhh, the good old days. I tried to take photos that would give a good idea of the barb length. So you will get a sense of what size fly you can tie with this saddle. I also adjusted the color to be accurate, but that's for my screen. Think, more white than cream and a slight hint of brown to the barring and you get the idea. This is the upper-half- the"dry fly" portion of a Whiting Farms High& Dry HALF cape. I can only use the bottom half for tying my large warm water flies and have no use for the smaller dry fly feathers.
