Vintage Retractable Mechanical Pencil with Pin Brooch, Like Joan from Mad Men
You are looking at a vintage retractable mechanical pencil. The top part has a pin fixture on the back where it could be attached to your clothing. The mechanical pencil is a little over 3 inches long and is black plastic(bakelite? with goldtone metal on both ends. The retracting mechanism works great. I could not find a name or maker on the pin or pencil. The only writing is JAPAN on the back of the pin. This piece reminds me of Joan from the TV series MAD MEN who always wears a pen or pencil. This is in excellent condition. The pin has some minor surface scratches commensurate with it's age. The pictures with the red background make the cord look gold; it is actually a reddish color. Antique Don Carlos Friedr. Herder Retractable Blade Knife Description Circa late 1800's. This is a very unique knife. The blade is retractable. You lift the grooved metal piece out of the side of the handle. Grab the tip of the knife blade and pull it out as far as you want it to extend and push the metal piece back into place, locking the blade. I have absolutely no idea of what this knife was originally designed for. The handle is wooden. The fitting is brass, and the blade and grooved metal locking mechanism are iron or steel. It's 10 3/4 in. long(overall) when fully extended and the blade has a total length of 4 5/8 in. It's in overall good condition with general use wear. The blade looks like it was ground or poorly sharpened. And the handle has a small crack. You can see a shadow of the Don Carlos logo on the handle but ... moreit's pretty well worn away. The knife is very solid and has very little corrosion or any significant damages and the finish is original and beautiful. The blade is extremely sharp near the point. I pulled it out to reveal 70 inches of tape before it got tight. And it will work if you want to use it but the retracting mechanism inside is not like it was along time ago and is kinda loose so it retracts by itself until it reaches around 14-16 and then you push it in easily without much effort the rest of the way if it stalls. the other is made from a vintage pink plastic& a very rare interesting peice- i have never seen one like this before. This was from a German womens collection and most of her notions ... morewere from germany and very old. because of the old colonial german design carved into it I assume its from Germany a long time ago. One side shows a grandma in a chair spanking a boy. the other side has a carving of a man in woman in colonial clothing dancing to music the man is playing on his instrument. there is a silver push button on this side that you would push to retract. the button will not retract the last 6 inches of the tape and the material tape shows wear from old age. the side of this where it seals at the seam is a little knicked up in 1 spot like someone tried to pry it open once but did not succeed, however they did succeed in cracking the top half. It is cracks and has wear but it is still solid and intact. it does not seem too brittle and should have many more years of life is its just going into a collection of old sewing equipment.

Antique Mechanical Pencil - retractable - Yellow Stone in Handle
This is an antique mechanical pencil. It retracts and extends perfectly with a slide that moves length wise on the shaft. It has intricate design work all over it and a yellow jewel at the end of the pencil. It is not marked as far as I can see. I believe that it is made out of a low karat gold. It is a pale gold color throughout. The pictures are tough to see the color because of the glare. The jewel in the back is yellow but it does have a little discoloration that you can see under the jewel. Over all it's a nice piece with only slight wear and tear on it.
