NEW JERSEY 1881, National Underground Electric Co. Stock Certificate
The certificate is dated April 22. 1 881. The company was incorporated in New Jersey in 1881. This is a nice low numbered certificate. 209, issued during the first year of incorporation. According to the New York Times in 1883 the offices of the company in Philadelphia were seized for the second time for non-payment of bills. The landlord had already seized the office for unpaid rent. It was reported that the office was shabby and that a large safe was missing from the office. Additional funds must have been secured since the company was still issuing stock in 1886 The company was formed by a Camden NJ company called the National Electric Conduit Company of Camden and it held a large block of the stock in the Philadelphia company. The Philadelphia company laid conduit for about six blocks down Market St in Philadelphia as a test in 1881 to ... moredemonstrate that it was possible to lay underground electric cables that would not interfere with telephone wires strung from telephones. This piece of London Underground history is in pretty good condition for it's age and the light paper stock. It was well used. However, and there is creasing and tears as seen in the above photographs. It comes from a collection of ephemera assembled by a New Zealand solider who was in the UK following WWI. Most postcards and other dated items were dated 1918 or 1919. The car being moved is loaded with mine refuse. The trolley wire arrangement to power the locomotive is clearly visible. The particular mine is not specified. I am quite sure this is a mine in the Central PA Coal Region. That area is where Paul Thomas took his mining photos. The stock number indicates this is the same ... morecolliery as the breaker interior photo I have up. Print condition is mint. Paul Thomas chronicled life in Central Pennsylvania’s Coal Region for many years. I bought this photo from the Thomas studio in Shamokin PA. No printing went on there after the mid 1980s. This is not any kind of recent copy. All of the photos and negatives at the Thomas studio were sold to the county historical society. This auction is for a nearly 100-year-old W. S. Darley Co. electrical device for locating concealed conductors such as metal pipes and wires. The W S Darley company. Located in Chicago, applied for the patent on this device in 1915. The patent was awarded in 1918. The technical drawings for the patent. Shown in the auction photos, contain the signature of William S. Darley. JPG files of these drawings will be supplied to the buyer, as well as two, high quality prints of each on 8.5" x 11" acid-free, watermarked paper. For an engineering or underground utilities business. This device, along with properly framed patent drawings, would make a very nice reception area display. The original 1915 patent application depicted a buzzer arrangement connected in series with batteries and the hidden underground conductor. However. This device ... moreis more advanced, using a secondary coil, whose output is connected in series with the concealed conductor. The locator uses a coil antenna wound on a wooden frame and connected in series with a high impedance Trimm headphone. The antenna is moved to detect the signal imparted to the conductor. This device is intended to be powered by 6 volts DC provided by 4. No. 6, 1-1/2 volt dry cells(not included in auction) The wooden box has a four-slot crib to hold these batteries. Tested with 6 volts DC of adequate amperage, this device operates well. The headphone and coil test good electrically. No hidden conductors were actually traced in the testing. The circuit contains a Kellogg capacitor with the latest patent date marking of 1916. I suspect that this device was an upgrade of the design originally applied for in the patent, likely manufactured around 1916-1918. For operation. This is a nice copy of the second album by the Electric Prunes entitled"Underground. released in late 1967. This is an original German import on the original tri-color Reprise riverboat label. The record itself is shiny black with only the most minor paper scruffs visible under a good light. It plays mint minus. The cover is entirely intact with no signs of ringwear, seamsplits or frays. It still has the original SHRINK WRAP.
