The drill is variable speed and two setting high speed and low speed. Both work fine. There are two settings on the top. One with a picture of a drill bit and one with a picture of a screw. The drill works in the drill mode and the latch does not stay in the screw mode. I am not sure what the screw mode is for, I have drilled and driven screws with the drill with no problem whatsoever. The auction includes 2 Makita 2.6AH 18V batteries. They both charge well and hold the charge well. To test the batteries I charged them and placed them in a Makita flash light and measured the time when the light was dim. One battery lasted 1:30 minutes.
