I've been doing plastic canvas for more years than I care to think about. And I've never heard of this craft. However, I looked over the projects very carefully, and I see no reason why you can use regular yarn. Projects include: Flower Basket, Heart Basket, Duck Basket, Bear Basket, Heart Frame, Ball Frame, Pink Frame, Southwest Frame, Checker Windsock, Flowertime Windsock, Halloween Windsock, and Christmas Windsock.
