Up for auction is a variable AC output transformer(Variac) made in the USA by General Radio Company. This item came from a legitimate auction at San Diego City College. I connected my DVM to show you that it does in fact work. The device is in great condition with only some minor pitting of the aluminum receptacle cover and also a minor dent in the same cover just to the lower right of the receptacle itself(see picture) The tin shroud has no ugly dents and is nice and round. However. The number K15948 is etched on it. The power cord is in excellent condition having an old fashioned gnarly-looking rectangular plug. Vintage Superior Electric Co. Portable Powerstat
This auction is for a vintage portable Superior Electric Co. Powerstat from a local estate. I've seen various Powerstats and Variacs over the years but this is the first one I've seen configured like this. The Powerstat is housed in a molded fiberglass shell or housing and has a carrying handle. The output cables are brittle from age so I haven't tried to plug it in and test it although the windings and wiper brush look in good condition with no arcing or burn marks and the rotor turns freely. Superior Electric Powerstat variable transformer also known as an autotransformer and commonly called a"variac" Model 116-U. Rated 7.5 Amp 1Kva. This item came from a surplus equipment sale. It looks to me to be"homebrew" in origin using quality 50's-60's era components. Function-wise it works fine. All the components work as they should and the wiring is in good shape. The ammeter and voltmeter are Triplett Model 337-S 3" square versions. Voltage reads 0-150 VAC. Ammeter reads 0-5 Amp AC. Both of these are in the output circuit. Note the transformer is rated 7.5 amp but the meters are 5 amp. This instrument is enclosed in a metal, slant front cabinet. The top is hinged and will open to expose the components and wiring- see the photo. Finish is showing wear typical of it's age, but still in pretty good ... moreshape. The variable transfomer is wired for(2) inputs. A"115" input that will produce a 1:1 maximum output, i.e. 115 volts in produces a maximum of 115 volts out. The"135" volt input will produce a maximum of 135 volts out for a 115 volt input. In other words using the"135" input you can produce about 20 more volts output than your input voltage- in most cases your line voltage. Input is selected by plugging the power cord into either the"115" or"135" socket on the back and placing the rear toggle switch on top of the cabinet in the proper position. See the photo. Fuse protection is by way of an Elmenco fused plug on the power cord. The other toggle switch switches the ammeter in and out of the circuit. On the back panel are 4 pin and 6 pin"antique radio type" tube sockets. There are no connections to the 4 pin. The 6 pin has several connections to different points in the circuit- I'm not sure what the intention was for these- possibly for remote voltage monitoring? The top has a hinged lid that opens to expose the internals, and there is a large access opening in the back. This item is from my Dad's electronics bench, and was built by him in the 1960's. My parents moved into a smaller place recently, and this item came to light during the downsizing. These are useful for bringing up the voltage gradually when doing circuit development.
