When Winter Runs Too Long (or, When Fishing For Non-Trout Species Looks Appealing)

by Tom Chandler on March 8, 2010 · 9 comments

It’s at this point in the winter – fresh out of patience, the snow is still falling, and others are seeing their spring hatches already – that alternate forms of fly fishing seem more reasonable.

As in very alternate. As in squirrel fishing. (Found via Taunted by Waters, who probably knows from nuts, being as he largely is one)

What do the Undergrounders think? Acorn No-Hackle? Oak Emerger? Or simply a Royal Peanut attractor?

That sport could really catch on around here, it seems much more thrilling than plain ol’ chicken fishing – http://www.conknet.com/~b_bull/special/chickenfishing.html  (Quote)

What weight tippet would you use? I mean, how much DOES a squirrel weigh?  (Quote)

I don’t know. I should ask Meski since she’s probably already better at this than I am…  (Quote)

Hilarious ! Was that a peanut ? I would have gone for the more natural offering with an acorn. Don’t let those cute little squirrels fool ya, I once found myself in the middle of a spurriel “spawn” Sexually crazed squirrels are scary !  (Quote)

More proof: Everybody’s a critic when it comes to fly selection…  (Quote)

Here in the Smokies I’ve often asked anglers I’ve guided if they purchased a squirrel stamp for their license when I was pulling their fly from a tree.

Shon, is it ethical to cast at spawning squirrels? Guess that’s a decision every angler has to make for himself, but I suggest everyone be aware of seasonal closures.  (Quote)

I have heard that hatchery raised squirrels are displacing the wild ones and that they will eat corn in preference to nuts. But, do they taste as good?  (Quote)

Sure, these urban squirrels are fun and all, but I’ve got a line on a more extreme squirrel – found only in remote areas of Uzbekistan.

It’s bigger, more ferocious, and laughs at ordinary peanut baits. In fact, I’m in the midst of creating my own “Squirrel Underground” line of special mammal-oriented rods – complete with bitchin’ logo.

Once again, I’m on the forefront of fly fishing’s next wave…  (Quote)
