The second item is the permissible respirator for self rescue. Both units are very well used and I have no idea as to if they would still function. The more interesting item is the miners leather work belt with three brass tags. The belt is very well worn. This is a Wood Miners Canary Cage. Oh. If this canary cage could talk I wonder what it would tell us? You will have fun watching your friends and family try to guess what this is! It is an awesome piece but it does have some issues and is not perfect but it still displays well. This one was actually used because you can see the bottom has traces of bird droppings on it. There is no water cup but it does have the feeder in it and 2 perches but the wood is split on one of the perches. It does have 2 bottom corners and 1 top corner that are broken away, one spindle is missing and one is broken. It has a few split pieces of wood that could be glue back. I tied a piece of string to the one on the outside edge so it would not get lost. I think it has a lot of character. These issues would not be hard to fix but even with the issues it is a great ... morepiece of Mining history. It is also stamped Germany on the bottom. Size is approximately 6 1/4" x 6" x 5" Mining workers would use these cages to carry caged canaries(birds) down into the mine tunnels with them. If there were dangerous gases present such as methane or carbon monoxide in the mine. The gases would kill the canary before killing the miners, thus providing a warning to exit the tunnels immediately. I lost my Grandfather back in the 40's in a mining accident so this really hit home when I found it at an estate sale. Up for sale An old mining methane gas tester has been used in coal mines got the scars to prove it. They do not use these anymore everthing is electronic but these worked for years but now its just a relic of the past. The way it works is its got two posts you put a strong magnet on to open the lock to un screw the bottom then you put in lighter fluid. They is a striker at the bottom of the unit which ignites the flame it burns low unless around methane then it jumps up that means gas is present and to leave that area.

VINTAGE MINE METHANE GAS DETECTOR JUSTRITE 2144 SB Working Condition
For your consideration is this rare methane gas detector used in mines years ago. Still functional today. I tested in with my gas wall heater at home. With unit on top of wall heater it will start flashing red when heater shuts off. There is a knob on side to adjust till light comes on. Then back off till light goes out. Has 2 bulbs in it with a lever to switch to either one as a safety feature i'm sure. This probably replaced the canary bird inside the mine. Its a Justrite 2144 SB. Thanks Steven
