ANTIQUE PERSIAN KHAMSEH LONG CARPET with BIRDS and ANIMALS. Southwest Persian tribal, Zagros Mountains, last quarter of the 19th century, and coming in very good overall condition for the collector or decorator. The exact size is: 4'11" x 9'1" 150 x 277 cm) The two large ivory medallions and a single center red medallion resting on a dark indigo field are all filled with an assortment of motifs including pecking chickens(morghi) two-headed mythological animals, and smaller quadrupeds, presumably guard dogs or goats. The side edges and corner spandrels of the field display the ribbon-like"shawl" design. This field composition is nicely framed by a border surround commonly used by the Khamseh in their weavings that consists of linked flower heads with small boteh elements used as filler devices. This carpet is symmetrically ... moreknotted on wool warps and wefts. All of the dyes are 100% natural and are derived from organic plant sources. The pile condition is allover evenly low, but not worn. The side cord over-castings are all original and complete. Both the top and the bottom endings are original and complete and are now sewn secure to prevent any future loss of structure.
