1949 Burdick EK-1 Portable EKG ECG Electrocardiograph w leads, paste, 'trodes ++
Up for sale is a Vintage Burdick Corporation Model EK-1 Portable EKG/ ECG/ Electrocardiograph. With power cord, ECG leads, paste tube, electrodes, even a"Burdick ECG" Screwdriver. Note: This is not the more common Model EK-2. But is their very first model. I've dated it to 1949 as the youngest it could possibly be, due to the absence of any reference to"Patent Applied For" but it could be older. Burdick's first patent application for an ECG was in early 1950( 2674992) which is mentioned on the nameplates of later machines. Although this is being sold as a vintage. Collectible medical device and not for use, I was curious to see what I could learn about it. So, I brought it up slowly with my Variac: the light comes on when the power switch is thrown, the tubes glow, it feeds paper when set to"Record" and ... morethe needles respond a little to selecting different electrode types or turning the other adjustment knobs- not too shabby for an electro-mechanical devise that's over 65 years old! Even a doctor who was born on the same day that this came off the production line would be retired by now! I did not hook up any electrodes or try it out any further- that would have been stupid. Since this is a vintage, collectible medical device which must not be used abd therefore no functionality is guaranteed. It comes with: Power Cord 5 Electrode ECG Lead 4 Flat and one Cupped Electrodes A Tube of Burdick Electrode Paste(now dried out of course) A"Burdick ECG" Screwdriver Plus a little bit of paper and the remains of the rubber straps for securing the electrodes(now rotted. But there's one length that's sufficiently attractive to display) It is in great vintage condition. With some scuffs and scratches. The lid locks on nicely and the handle bears its incredible weight. It is missing one rubber foot, but the screw to attach a replacement is in the drawer. This is a great opportunity to own an early example of Burdick's original ECG- pre-dating not only the 1950 patent

Antique Portable Cambridge Medical Electrocardiograph
Up for auction is an antique Electrocardiograph. The machine was manufactured and patented by the Cambridge Instrument Co. out of Ossining. N.Y. This instrument would be used to monitor heart beats and heart palpitations. It is from the early 1940's. I am unsure if this machine works and I do not want to mess with it as I do not know how to operate the Electrocardiograph. The only damage I see in the wood front plate, the cracks on the right black mechanism as seen in photos, and chipping on the left black plate also in photos. All items are sold as is. This is a used Burdick Atria 3000 EKG Machine. The only test I could perform was to power it up with a power supply that is not included. It appears to be functional. But I do not have any leads or any other way to test it. It will need a new battery pack as the old pack was dead and was removed. I could include it, but it is dead. Only the item shown an some sample paper is included. No power supply or cables. Small scratch on the display as shown in the one pic. Not really noticeable when unit is in use. Since the Italian physicist Dr. Luigi Galvani(1737-1798) first proposed the idea of"animal electricity" in 1787. The work of many scientists has led to development of the electrocardiographs used today. The first machine that could produce a paper record of electrical currents was invented in 1867. The first human electrocardiogram was published twenty years later. In 1901, the Dutch physiologist Dr. Willem Einthoven(1860-1927) invented the string galvanometer. It was commercially manufactured by the Cambridge Scientific Instrument Company around 1911. The company made many subsequent models, including the Simpli-Trol Portable Model, produced from the 1930s to the 1950s. I don't know how to use it, but it comes with instructions and I tested it by powering it up and pressing the AUTO button. It spit out some tape with printing on it, and stopped when I pressed the stop button, so it appears to be working. Because I didn't fully test it. I am offering it with no guarantees as to full functionality, though I have no reason to suspect anything is wrong with it. It comes with the cables pictured and some stickers which I assume you put on the patient and clip the wires to.
