Fairbanks Morse Vintage Portable Belt Drive / Hand Crank Concrete Mixer
This is an old Fairbanks Morse concrete mixer. I don't know the age. This is the first time it has been out of the barn for at least 50 years. I understand that my father purchased it new. But I don't know when. I know he and his brothers did a lot of concrete work on our farm in about 1938-1940, so it could have been purchased then. He returned to the farm after the war, and might have purchased it then. Nonetheless, I am sure it pre-dates 1957. He had a Farmall H with a drive belt pulley, that he used occasionally to drive a big cutoff saw. He probably used the belt to operate this mixer, but I never witnessed it. This mixer was lightly used and well cared for. Paint is original. One of the pictures shows what is left of the original Fairbanks Morse decal. There are 5 cast iron pieces making up the bulk of the unit. The tub is very ... moreheavy sheet metal. The rest is welded angle iron. There is a wood skid bolted to the bottom. This unit is very heavy. I am estimating 300-400 pounds. I could only get it out of the barn with my tractor forks. There are 14 settings on the tub angle; 7 right and 7 left. Two of the castings are marked"H&ZCO. Belleville, PA" Two grease fittings. The unit is still greased up and spinning freely. Until these photos were shot. I had never noticed a weld repair on the round, cast iron angle selector. I took several pictures of the weld. It goes all across the bottom third of the angle selector. It looks like a very good repair. I could see no other damage or repairs. There are 3 fins inside the drum. Drum was well cleaned and fins are clean and intact. Unit stands about 5-1/5 ft tall. Not sure of drum capacity. But drum is 17" across at mouth, 23" across at the bottom, and 24" deep. I have the original hand crank. There is a nut welded on the belt wheel. The hand crank is not much more than a long bolt with wood handle that screws into the nut. With some work. I am sure this could be reconfigured to hook up to an electric motor or gasoline engine.
