Fishing the Big Hole River
The Big Hole River, often referred to as the ‘Last Best River‘, begins at Skinner Lake, high in the Beaverhead Mountains of Southwest Montana. This free flowing, Blue Ribbon Trout Stream is home to fluvial Arctic Grayling, Cutthroats, Brook Trout, Mountain Whitefish, Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout. Wild and free, the Big Hole River rises near the small town of Jackson, Montana and flows more than 150 miles to join the Ruby and the Beaverhead River to form the Jefferson River in Twin Bridges, Montana.  From our location, its easy to sample some of the best Montana fishing.

River at the Silver Bow Club
The Silver Bow Club boasts 3.5 miles of riverfront on the Big Hole River in the Canyon Stretch. Located approximately 50 river miles from the confluence of the Jefferson, the Silver Bow Club sits on the best stretch of river in terms of fish size and population. Our guests are encouraged to access the river by crossing the hay meadows and access the numerous pools, riffles and runs. Only during spring run-off is the river too high to wade comfortably. For those who prefer to float, the Big Hole River offers numerous boat launches. Just upstream from the Silver Bow Club is the Divide Bridge access. Here you’ll find an easy boat launch and picnic area. Downstream, is the Maiden Rock Fishing Access. Float the beautiful canyon for some of the best fly fishing the Big Hole River has to offer.

The Big Hole River starts in the Beaverhead Mountains south of Jackson, Montana and flows on for about 156 miles. Beginning as a slight stream, it picks up muscle as it joins with ... morethe North Fork, and draws more volume as it passes through the Wise River basin. At the Continental Divide it changes its northeasterly direction and heads southeast until it joins the Beaverhead and forms the Jefferson River close to the town of Twin Bridges, Montana. It hosts one of the last known habitat for the native fluvial artic grayling but is best known to fly fishers for its trout.

Like so many Montana rivers, the Big Hole is as full of history as it is of water. When Lewis and Clark stumbled upon it, the river was providing a buffer zone between rival Indian tribes vying for land as they sagely anticipated the westward push of European miners, furriers and settlers. Fifty years later, a significant number of the Nez Percé, a tribe that had initially befriended the Expedition, refused to accept life on a reservation and were nearly wiped out by U.S. troops in the Battle of the Big Hole. Today’s battles consist of quarrels between ranchers who desire water for irrigation and recreational users who wish to see the water preserved.

Fishing the river can be basically divided into three sections. From the headwaters at Skinner Lake to Fish Trap, the river meanders slowly through high meadowlands. This is where the few remaining artic grayling can be found, although browns and rainbows are in abundance here. In the second section, Fish Trap to Melrose, you will find boulders and pocket water rushing through a narrow canyon; here rainbows outnumber the browns with an estimated 3000 fish per mile. The final section, Melrose to Twin Bridges, is lined with cottonwood bottoms, braided channels and long, slow pools. In contrast to the second link, browns outnumber rainbows 2 to 1 with approximately 3000 fish per mile.

This is a small town with a big heart, a veritable fisherman’s paradise. Located near the fish-filled Madison River, and surrounded by the waters of Ennis Lake, the Ruby River, Hebgen ... moreLake, Quake Lake, Henry’s Lake, the Big Hole River and scores of smaller streams, the town boasts what many consider the best trout fishing in the world. As well known for its wranglers as its anglers, Ennis has succeeded in maintaining the look and feel of its original, gold town roots. Warm and hospitable, the area offers a wide variety of accommodations ranging from simple campsites, rustic motels and gracious hotels, to full-service, luxury resorts. Fly shops are numerous, stocked by local experts ready to advise and assist, while guides can be booked for trips throughout the area.

Boredom is the only thing unavailable in Ennis. Throughout the summer season the city hosts a series of events, including its renowned 4th of July Celebration Parade and a genuine, old-fashioned rodeo. In August, fly-fishing luminaries from around the US, flock to Montana to compete in the Madison Fly Fishing Festival. Athletes also find their way to Ennis to compete in the city’s Madison Trifecta, two shorter races followed by a full Marathon at 9000 feet, the highest elevation run in America. For the true sportsman, October falls in with the annual Hunter’s Feed. What’s caught, typically elk, moose deer, pheasant and bobcat, gets cooked on the streets and served up to hungry spectators.

Flanked by three grand mountain ranges, The Tobacco Root, Gravelly and Madison, Ennis is scenic and entertaining – truly an authentic, fly fisher’s haven.

Perfect Place for a Family!
Just spent five INCREDIBLE day at the Salmon Fly Cabin (July 13 - 18, 2015) with a family of 6. Plenty of room (1 queen bed downstairs, 4 twins in loft above) in rugged, log cabin setting. Spotless interior with all the comforts of home and an attentive host (Adam) who was available at all times if needed (a true "lifesaver" when we realized we needed more toilet paper!). Be sure you load up on your ... more groceries and snacks because the closest store is in Butte. There's a restaurant with great food (The Hitchin' Post) in nearby Melrose, about 25 minutes away. Whether just hanging out on the porch enjoying the view, or using the location as your touchbase for day-tripping through the Montana mountainside, this is THE PLACE to stay - photos don't do it justice! We even got up early and took a daytrip to nearby Yellowstone! Yep - perfect!

Amazing
This was a trip of a lifetime for me and The Silver Bowe Club exceeded my expectations truly a five star stay. We stayed in the big house but got a chance to view the cabins and they are great also. I started each day watching the amazing sun rise over the mountains on patio which has two fireplaces. We enjoyed the Big Hole River swimming and floating the river all the way to town. We hiked, road four ... more wheelers and the hilight of the stay was the helicopter ride. The owners of the house are amazing there is nothing they won't help you with if you need something. Very very clean. Can't wait to go back. I have to put in a word for the Hiching Post grill and bar the BEST hamburger I have ever eaten. I can not think of one bad commit about this house or the trip. My best advice is to talk to Adam he knows everything about fishing, hunting, things to see and do. I can't wait to bring my family back.

Big Sky Fishing on the Big Hole at Silver Bow Club
My wife and I spent 3 wonderful days at Silver Bow Club, located between Dillon and Butte Montana. We rented one of the fishing cabins for 3 days. Adam our host greeted us at the main lodge, which is a spectacular building. He filled us in on our lodging and the fishing and then took us for a tour of the ranch pointing out his favorite fishing holes. The cabins were situated on the ranch about 100 ... more yards from the Big Hole River. The 360˚ views from the cabins were beautiful. I believe the ranch has about 3 miles of river within its boundaries. The ranch is located about 40 min from either Dillon or Butte so it is advisable to get your groceries as you arrive and gas up. The towns of Melrose, Divide and Wise River are closer. They have bars, restaurants, fly shops and Wise River has a quick shop but no real grocery store. Adam and his family members were friendly and helpful hosts. The ranch setting is spectacular. The cabin was immaculate and had a washer and dryer and well-appointed kitchen. The sleeping and living arrangements were very nice. There were lots of sizable fish to catch (rainbows, browns, and mountain white fish) and most of the best fishing holes could be easily accessed by wading. I had my best luck near the entrance of the property or at the far end of the property. Adam can fill you in on the details. It is helpful to rent a jacked up golf cart to get to far end of the property or from fishing hole to fishing hole in a timely manner. We caught lots of fish and the entire experience was a fisherman’s dream. I highly recommend the Silver Bow Club.

Amazing scenery, great fly fishing along with quiet seclusion
We took advantage of a mild March weather pattern and spent a couple days at the Silver Bow Club to do some fly fishing on the Big Hole River. With 3.5 miles of river frontage, we enjoyed exploring and fishing the river and then returning to our cabin for lunch and dinner. We stayed in the Salmon Fly cabin - just beautiful! Some of the furnishings were built with repurposed lumber from historic buildings ... more on the property. We enjoyed hearing about the history of the Silver Bow Club from owner Adam. We plan to return this coming summer and have him take us for an aerial photography tour in the property's helicopter!! Over the top luxury with great prices, we felt so pampered. Highly recommended!
