Decent success on a black rubber legs in size 6 with either pink San Juan worm or black zebra midge under a bobber. Finding most fish in deeper slower buckets and runs. Putting enough ... moreweight on to "check in" with the bottom occasionally.
The streamer fishing has really started to shine in the afternoon. Starting to see some fish chase pretty well. Not super hot streamer fishing but good enough to keep fisherman engaged. I've been a fan of olive sparkle minnow size 6 and sex dungeons. Fishing them slower earlier in the day and faster as the water warms up.
Saw a few fish rising to midges through the afternoon. Fishing Griffith Gnats and size 18 parachute Adams. They don't seem to be super selective if you can find some actively rising.
It's pretty good out there definitely worth going so bring some warm clothes and go for it.

The Big Wood River is closed for the season and will open on 5/28/16.
Cold start, were in the water by 9:30 should probably have been 11:00 Fishing definitly picked up in the afternoon black buggar was MVP for sure. Fish are lazy. Found them in the soft ... morewater on the banks and behind the deep boulders. Took along float covered a lot of water. Ended up with about fifteen fish, one beautiful hook jawed Brown trout that measured out at 19 in.

In the last Couple of weeks, the fishing on the Middle Provo River has been good to great. The Buffalo midges on the Middle Provo river hit their peak a couple of weeks ago and the ... morehatch is starting to slow down. Not to worry, the Blue Winged Olive hatch on the Middle Provo River is just getting started and should make for some excellent fly fishing in the coming weeks. In the morning, we are still nymphing with a light weight bounce or in-line rig. For nymph fishing, our best flies for the Middle Provo River are size 22-24 thread midge in colors: red, black, grey, brown, and olive. In the afternoon, as the Buffalo midge hatch and the Blue Winged Olive hatch get going, I am switching over from nymph patterns to some bigger offerings. Best nymph patterns in the afternoon on the Middle Provo River have been a size 16-18 black Zebra Midge, 18-20 Grey RS2 and 18-20 black WD-40. The dry fly fishing on the Middle Provo River is excellent in the afternoon. I have had the most success fishing an 11 foot leader with 6-7x tippet. My most productive fly combination is a size 18, black or brown, Mother Shucker dry fly with a size 20 Noseeum Blue Winged Olive or comparadun trailed behind it.
The Lower Provo River is in excellent condition for any of you anglers looking to take a break from the Middle Provo River. You’ll have a chance at catching a fish in the 20-inch range or better. The morning bite has been very consistent with an excellent midge hatch. The last couple of guide trips I have had on the Lower Provo River has been all dry fly fishing. The rig I have had the most success with has been a 12 foot leader with a size 18 cluster midge pattern, with a size 18 comparadun Blue Winged Olive trailed behind it. Anyone looking to just nymph fish, try to find some deeper pools. The fish seem to be very spooky with such low water flows. The best patterns for nymph fishing have been a size 16-18 sow bug as your point fly and a Blue Winged Olive nymph trailing behind it.

The McCloud opens April 30th and with a good snowpack on and around Mt. Shasta we are seeing healthy water flows that should make for one heck of a spring season. McCloud River rainbows ... morewere used to stock many of todays' famous fisheries and can be a feisty bunch.
Floated the Madison River from Lyons Bridge. It was cool and a little windy and the maiden run for the new boat. We weren't trying that hard and still managed to land some 8 nice fish. ... moreWater was clear and there was no traffic on the river but us. Winter is back on the menu for the next week. Next few days are for skiing.
It has been a long winter in the Park City, Utah area, but in the last couple of weeks it seems like spring is getting the best of winter. This is great news for any fisherman that ... moremight be out here for a ski trip and is looking for another activity. The Middle Provo river flowing below Jordanell Reservoir is at winter flows, which is about 150 CFS (cubic feet a second). The midge fishing has finally started to get active in the past week, and there has also been a spotting of some buffalo midge. Nymph fishing has been most productive in the morning. The best rig for nymphing has been a light nymph rig with black or gray Zebra Midge as your point fly and small size 24-26 thread midge (best colors: red, black, olive and tan). You can look for some good dry fly fishing to start around noon.
This time of year it is really important to have a longer leader and lighter tippet. Typically, we have been using a 12 foot leader and 6-7 x tippet. The flows below Deer Creek Reservoir (the lower Provo River) have also continued to flow at their winter flows which is about 100 CFS. There has been consistent dry fly fishing in the morning with midge clustering on the surface. For the morning dry fly fishing, I have been fishing a tandem rig using a Quiggly Hackle Stacker as my point fly and small size 22 Mother Sucker trailing about 18 inches behind the hackle stacker. Once the sun hits the water, the dry fly fishing in the morning slows down. Not to worry the nymph fishing continues to be solid for the rest of the day. With the low flows, I have continued to have success with that lighter, in-line rig. This year they seem to prefer a larger sow bug in a size 14-16, with a small olive midge emerger size 24-22 trailing behind it.
Fishing was a bit on the “crisp” side with temps hovering around 30 degrees but the fish didn’t seem to mind. Once the ice melted off enough to get to the river mouths, ... morethe fish were happy to see us. We fished small black buggers down deep on a super slow swing and saw good action on both browns and rainbows. Outside air was cold and frozen guides were a problem but water temps stayed warm enough to keep the fish active. When faced with the frozen guide problem the best solution is to hold the rod down in the warmer water, which usually clears the guides in a few seconds.
We started late in the day due to the cold conditions and ice on the lake. March fishing most often starts late. Sleep in, big breakfast, then hit the water around 12 or 1 when the water warms up. Good news, we saw the first Blue Winged Olive ( mayfly ) of the year. This means the big show is just around the corner. We found two selective fish on the surface sucking down dries. Dry fly season is just around the corner. Weeee!
Now we are switching gears and are headed up on Dworshak for more great catching! At the moment Kokanee catching has been pretty good on days when the sun is out and weather patterns ... moreare stable. As spring finally arrives and days get warmer catching will just get even better! Smallmouth Bass catching will really start heating up in April when water temps heat up a little. The way our Spring has been going, shouldn't take much for the water to start warming. Currently we have been experiencing day time high's in the 60's or close to it. A bit warmer then normal.
Lots of water flowing into the reservoirs that feed the Truckee. Stampede Reservoir has come up over 15 feet and things look good at both Bocca and Lake Tahoe. The water os slightly ... moreoff colored with 1.5 feet of visibility, plenty of distance for trout to hunt food.
Flows are high and you might wnat to check the day ou go. Flows over 1000 at Bocca might be a call to stay home or do some sight seeing.
Probe the tailouts and banks with BWOs and nymphs. In current seams to bigger water try some streamers with a prince nymph dropper. The bigger water is knocking plenty of food lose and we should have a great speing on the Truckee.
The creek below the Cold Canyon Creek confluence is pretty much blown out right now. Water is muddly with visibility between 6 to 10". The river is being pulsed so watch for fast rising ... morewaters at times. Once the weather clears the creek should clear up within a week or so a clear water from the lake flushes things out.
The spawn is pretty much over. Still, use caution when wading. Fishing has been slow. Mud and silt is being blown into the creek from all the feeder creeks. Our hope is that recent reed beds aren't getting suffocated. Above Cold Canyon Creek the water appears clear and presents pretty much your only window right now. Use small indicators with flies #20 or smaller. Tipets should be 6 or 7x.
Ice is receding and the fly tiers are once again becoming fishermen. Temps are supposed to reach in to the 60s this week giving the food chain another bump and waking up the fish. ... moreMost put ins and takeouts are open and the ice has cleared off most sections of most rivers.
Big Changes on the Madison this year the whole river is staying open all year. This makes options limitless. Wade fishing up river between Hebgan reservoir and Quake lake has been good as the rainbows are coming up to spawn and rainbow populations in this area have soared. The wade section between slide inn and Lyons bridge has also been good. Water is still cold so look for the time of day with the slightly warmer water temps usually 1:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon.
A few boats have been putting in up high at Lyons bridge. My buddy Charlie floated Lyons to ruby creek the other day and had good fishing on Girdle bugs for the second half “Morning was cold, fishing was weak” Most of the angler action has been going on below Varny bridge with the colder water temps it is more effective to find some slower water and get out and pound with nymphs on the bottom. Vary has a lot of good get out and wade water. Fishing could get really good down below town at Valley Garden. This is the first time it has been open this time of year. I don’t know anybody that has fished there yet this year but it could be good considering that it is right above the lake and the rainbow are in the mood to move up river.
The ice is off the lake but he waters on the south end is very shallow very difficult to navigate I tried to take a drift boat out to the main channel the other day and failed there wasn’t enough water to float an empty drift boat. Anybody thinking of floating down the river into the lake could be in for a big surprise when they get there. We did find some fish at the north end in the deeper water as usual a little black beggar pulled gently of the ice was the trick for us.
The Bear Trap Canyon has probably been fishing about the best. Warmer water temperatures have the midges and fish moving. Again, later in the afternoon, between the dam and power house. The fish are a little more aggressive down here so you can twitch a streamer and there are a few blue wing olives starting to show up opening the door to a little spring dry fly-fishing.
The stretch from Warm Springs down to Blacks Ford has been fishing well, with lots of drift boats, but good fishing on a brown buggar and a san juan worm. Get in early and stay ahead of the pack get out and wade the slow water.
Sounded like a great idea this morning going fishing on the Jefferson River. Fished Hells Canyon to Silver Star at lunch time. Water was moderately clear. Got caught in the winds gusting ... moreto 30 mph. It was not all that great. Had to chase my hat twice. Got three fish on buggars. No hatches, only streamer fishing.
Flaming Gorge Dam is currently releasing an average daily release of 2,200 cfs. The February forecast for unregulated inflow into Flaming Gorge for the April-July period is continuing ... moreto decrease and is currently at 70% of average. Dry conditions are forecast this spring. The remainder of February falls within the winter period base flow classification outlined in the 2006 Record of Decision, while March and April are transition months. The base flow classification period limits the daily change to 3% per day and those restrictions end during the transition period. Therefore, beginning February 15, 2016, Flaming Gorge Dam will begin decreasing from 2,200 cfs to minimum releases of 800 cfs according to the attached schedule. It is anticipated that releases will remain at 800 cfs until the beginning of spring runoff sometime in May or June. Base flow releases are subject to observed hydrology and all projections may change.
Fishing
Our guides have been on the water a lot lately training new guides for this season and fishing with some of the crew from the shop in SLC. Yesterday we started to see the larger Buffalo midges that we have been waiting for. There were also BWO’s on the water and the fish that were rising were more than willing to eat our BWO patterns. We also tossed around streamers for a short time and had great results on black dungeons.
Tips
We have been throwing 150 grain sinking lines and 7ips sinking leaders while fishing steamers and looking for medium speed water with good structure and letting it get near the bottom before starting the retrieve and letting it swing through the current before re casting. The BWO and Midge fishing has been the best in slower water. If you are not seeing bugs move, try and find a sheltered area from the wind also look for shaded areas. We have had the best success fishing BWO Duns as a lead fly and tying a cripple behind it, they tend to eat the cripple 9 out of 10 times.
The warm winds are a coming, ice is melting back, time to let the mind wander from knee deep powder to knee deep water. A long piece of water has opened up, on the west side of Ennis ... morelake. Some fresh water seeps coming up are keeping the ice at bay, and the food chain is slowly coming to life. Went down yesterday with Shawn and my wife and were pleasantly surprised. We were casting a small grizzly buggar out on the ice twitching it off, letting it fall to the bottom then stripping it in super slow. Water is cold in both the lake and river; fish aren’t in the mood to do anything fast. Patience is the key. Let them take a good long look at I it. Shawn and Anni each had a couple of fish before I “got with the program” Once I got the right combination fly and technique I caught up in a hurry, One beautiful 21 in rainbow.
It's game on out there. Ice is coming off everywhere and the fishermen are emerging from their winter slumber. On the way to Bozeman saw 4 or 5 drift boats on the lower Madison one boat had a fish on. The 2016 fishing season has begun. Heading up river tomorrow to see if the fish are awake, higher up. Tight lines everyone!
The river closed on November 15th, 2015 for the year. The McCloud opens for the 2016 season on Saturday April 30th.
Fishing has not been good this week. Look for other waters.
Last week's warm up has provided some good fishing on the Snake River. It looks like there is more warmer weather ahead which should lead to some comfortable fishing. Winter black ... moreand brown stone files are starting to emerge. Midges and Baetis will be the vast majority of hatches for the remainder of winter. Streamers too!
Upper Madison River - The Upper Madison has been good fishing up around Three Dollar Bridge, Raynold’s Pass Fishing Access and between the lakes. But the snow is around three ... morefeet around the river so it takes some work to get to the river. This weekend will warm up providing some good fishing opportunities. Small zebra midges are working well. Look for holes and deep runs as the water is a bit thin and the fish will be sharing the water. Expect more midge hatches as the weather warms. Another cold front is coming in next week so which should slow things down again. Up near the slide, on warmer days, look for midge hatches.
Lower Madison River - The Lower Madison has been fishing quite well. The recent break in the weather has helped increase the opportunities. The Dam has also been good fishing with Zebra Midges, Czech nymphs, Ray Charles as well as Mayfly nymphs. In the mornings they tend to be deeper with the fish eating on near top in the afternoons. We are also seeing small dries do well when fish are looking up. Look for deeper slower holds to produce. Crayfish patterns are always a good lower Madison option.
The Beaverhead River is fishing well. It is a good winter choice. We are seeing a good snowpack this winter which means the Clark Canyon Reservoir will probably be full during the ... morespring/summer time. The river is open from Pipe Organ Bridge to the Jefferson River. Found some good fishing near Corrals Fishing Access.
