Tall Antique Victorian Oak Cylinder Desk Carved Secretary Glass Front Shelves
Fantastic Victorian era cylinder top desk. Made from oak with pine secondary woods. Panelled back and sides. The large upper cabinet has flexible. Movable shelves and period glass doors. It rests atop a cylinder or roll top desk area with a small drawer and several pigeon holes. The writing surface is covered in black felt and pulls out to provide a larger area. There is a large overhanging drawer as well as two smaller drawers and a cabinet below, for even more storage. All of the drawers have brass pulls and escutcheons and dovetail joints. The lower area is spoon carved in a charming leaf pattern. This piece most likely dates from the late 1800's. This piece is in good condition. But does have some cosmetic flaws, as is to be expected in a piece of this age. Several of the escutcheons are missing as well as the door pulls on the upper ... morecabinet. The drawer pulls are loose as well and one of the escutcheons looks like it has been reattached. There is a piece of wood missing from the molding below the desk top as well. Antique 1800's Desk Walnut Slant Front Top Section Only or Countertop Original
Antique 1800's desk slant front top or possibly a counter top desk for a country store. Etc. I believe that it's all original with the original outside finish and interior light green paint. The wood is walnut, popular back in the old days. The early desk hardware is pictured in photos# 3 and# 8. As you can see it possibly is a desk that just sat on a counter, etc. because of the way it's not finished on bottom and not much of evidence of any nails or screws holding it on to a base, so possibly a complete unit in itself and all complete. Photo#9 shows the pencil or pen holder that extents the whole inside front. In photo#4 the hole for an early ink well can be seen. It measures about 26 inches wide, about 20 1\4 inches deep and about 8 1\2 inches high in back and about 6 1\2 inches high in front. The slant front with aging has ... morea couple of cracks from the wood drying over the many years. You can notice in photos#2,3,and#8 that the interior top looks lighter than the outside which is common with antiques where the outside is exposed to light, smoke, dust etc. thru the years darkening the color and I would say the exterior is close to a medium(Early American Minwax) color which is a desirable color for antiques.It's a fairly heavy piece about 26 lbs. and shipping will vary depending on where it's going just to let you know. There are light dings and one more noticeable ding on the front of the secretary where it drops down(see pics#10, 11) There are also a few tiny chips low on the front two feet and one chip on the very back side of the secretary top. This listing is for a Fantastic Chippendale Style walnut( I think and am not 100% sure) and fancily veneered vintage Drop Front Secretary Desk with Ball and claw Feet and shell style carvings. 36 inches in overall height. About 16 inches overall depth at widest point of legs and 22 inches overall width again at widest point of legs. Brass lock and hardware but no key. Brass hinges and other hardware. Exotic veneer work. Two drawers. With hardware on one drawer broken and missing in part. Should not be very tough to find replacement hardware. I might be able to assist the buyer in doing so. Drop down door reveals a writing surface roughly 19 inches wide and 14 inches in depth with two drawers and 5 compartments worked in the back. Very elegant. This auction is for an antique brass hotel bell. The piece stands approx. 4 and 1/2" tall; t he gong has a diameter of approx. 3" and t he base is approx. 3 and 1/4" square. The brass bell leans a bit to one side. second photo) Patent markings are on the top of the gong: PATs AUG. 25.1863& APR. 8. 56(fourth photo) The square base appears to be made of iron and is filled with a plaster-like substance. The base has been painted black with colored geometric shapes inlaid at the corners. There is wear to the edges of the base which I have shown in the photos. It does work but you must strike sharply. Up for auction is an authentic L& JG Stickley desk. 613 with a good original finish. This is a beautifully constructed desk with through tenons, figured quartersawn oak and a nice original finish. The desk has not been refinished or otherwise messed with, and I have not even waxed it, so NO briwax, pledge, paste wax, orange oil, Old English, etc. has touched this desk. If you buy it and want me to wax it, I will, but I wanted the future owner to have the option of an unmolested finish. The desk is in very good condition. But still has some damage commensurate with age and use. After a very thorough going over, I have found and/or photographed the following: Loss of finish on the top from a spill and drink ring. That should not show after a good waxing. A small chip on the lower right side of the drawer. A medium-sized chip to the top ... moreleft of the desk drop front and top corner of the desk. A blue stain from writing on the interior of the desk. A long crack on the right side panel of the desk. It also looks like the front of the desk was snapped apart some years back and re-glued using hide glue. The only evidence is a missing screw on the right side of the hinge. And some projection of the interior wood on the dropfront panel. Some tiny flecks of paint and/or finish loss where flecks have been removed. Note: I have been as careful as possible in my description. But please look carefully at all photos and make your own assessment. American Federal Walnut Antique Slant-Front Desk, Mid-Atlantic States c. 1790
American Federal Walnut Slant Front Desk. Mid-Atlantic States With satinwood inlays over splayed French feet; c. 1790-1810 Item# 130102EWP01 This is a very fine American Federal Period Slant Front Desk of Mid-Atlantic origin. Crafted in solid walnut c. 1790-1810. The lid is a highly figured single board(14 1/4" in horizontal depth) flanked by lipped cleats pinned on either end with an applied molded front lip. It lowers over original forged iron hinges to rest on walnut lopers, revealing eight small drawers over eight valanced pigeon-hole slots flanking a tombstone-door with channel-molded document drawers on either side of it. The scroll cut form of each valance over the pigeon-holes perfectly matches the form of the slot dividers. The interior drawers have numerous inscriptions: each has a"WW" which are intertwined on some ... moredrawers as"X/ one inscribed"Small.amd 74.957 NDE" The interior door opens to reveal a pair of drawers over a large cubby, one of the drawers inscribed: J C(quite clear) Reuben. Or possibly" J C Lieutenant" and dated" January 25th 1787" the 17 of 1787 is quite unclear. But after carefully examining it we are pretty sure that is what is inscribed. The interior cubby is an ingenious bit of craftsmanship- by pulling out a nail from the middle backboard. That backboard quickly is removed from the case; this reveals a natural knot in the pine board behind the cubby-hole with two tiny tenons that drop into the desk; by lifting on this knot, the tenons lift and allow the entire cubby to slide forward out of the desk. It is a gorgeous and flawlessly crafted box of solid walnut with dovetail joinery, the back board lifting out of the cubby-box from rabbets along either side, revealing a pair of hidden drawers inside. It is so well crafted and hidden that while after a close examination, the careful observer might suspect the presence of hidden drawers, actually being able to find these requires access to the backboards.
