Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. The desk is a reproduction made by the Maddox Table Co. of Jamestown, New York. This desk comes right out of the New England estate. The desk has those wonderful features most folks are looking for, such as all-wood drawers with dovetail corners, and clawed feet. The hardware and locks are the originals that came with the desk, not replacements. The desk was in my family for around ... more60 or so years, so the desk dates to at least 1950, and it may be older than that- I'm just not sure. The desk is the slant-front style, hinged at the bottom, so it opens up and the front lays flat to become the writing surface; the desk front can be locked. When the desk front is opened and lowered into the writing position, two arms come out automatically to support the writing surface. Inside the desk there are 3 small drawers, and holders for stashing letters and so forth. In the center of the opened desk, inside, there is a closed compartment with no lock; the compartment door is scratched. There are 3 drawers below the writing surface that extend almost the full width of the desk, and each one of them can be locked. These drawers have a graceful bow front(see photos) Above the desk itself is a prominent feature, a bookcase with 2 shelves covered by hinged glass doors that swing out and can be locked. The bookcase doors do not line up 100% vertically when closed, a common problem with these desks. Antique Oak Tole Painted Shabby Chic Slant Front Desk w/ Gallery Shelf This is a very solidly build heavy oak slant front desk that has been painted in the tole fashion. The desk was originally a slant front desk but someone somewhere along the line decided to modify it with ships so that the writing surface was flat. This is a very solid and heavy piece of furniture with the boards used to construct it being 3/4 of an inch thick of solid oak and the legs are up to an 1 1/2 thick of solid oak. The styling and heavy construction lead me to believe this is quite old. I would estimate 1880's. The paint is a newer modification though i am not sure when it was done. Judging from the age of the modification to make the desk flat I would estimate 1930's or 40's. The desk is in very good condition but it does have some wear and damage. ... moreThere are some chips in the paint along one edge where the modifications are and there is a chip in the right foot but it has long been painted over. Shipping Details Payment Details About US Auction Info Returns Click Image To Enlarge Click Image To Enlarge Antique Mid Atlantic Philadelphia Federal Period Drop Front Desk 1790-1820 Description(Make sure to scroll down and view all photos) Offered For Auction is this Antique American Mid-Atlantic or Philadelphia Federal Period Slant Front Desk. Circa 1790- 1820. A stunning piece with a very deep rich patina in the original finish. The lid of the desk is solid cherry dovetailed and framed on two sides. Open the lid carefully to let it rest on solid pull-out lopers(3-3/16" x 1" faced with a molded lip that frames the front edge of each. The pull out hardware knobs are original yet removed since they now easily pulled out of the wood and the knob ends are bent at the threaded end. Both hinges on the drop appear to be original with ... moresix handmade screws securing the hardware. The key lock on the front of the drop is probably original brass and has a swing cover hiding the key hole. The drop does have two very old horizontal age cracks in the front which have not altered the strength or alignment of the door. The desk features a fitted interior featuring a door in the center. The door retains its original lock hardware which upon opening reveals a letter hole which at one time also contained one or two drawers. The letter hole is flanked on either side by a pull-out slot for papers. And next to it are two small drawers which rest over one large drawer which rests over a large open pigeon hole. All the brass hardware is original but sadly one of the knobs on the right pull-out slot is missing. The case of the desk contains four long graduated drawers carefully constructed of a secondary wood probably poplar or beech. The frame is held together using hand cut dovetail joints and features bases with hand planed surfaces where the bottom side of the drawer base is hand tapered at the ends so the drawer base fits perfectly and than glued into the drawer frame. We have had it for many years and have no more room for it. The key serves to open and close the desk but does not lo ck it. The desk is not rotted anywhere. Not even around the base. Fine Antique 18th Century American Chippendale Mahogany Slant Front Desk c.1770

Description: This listing is for a Chippendale Period Slant Front Desk circa 1770-80. Salem Massachusetts, in the manner of John Chipman(b. 1746-1819) It features solid Cuban Mahogany case, each side crafted of a single solid plank, through-dovetailed at the top and dovetailed at the bottom. The slant front lid features an original keyhole escutcheon over what appears to be the original brass lock, falling onto arms that slide out with brass knobs- one original, the left one replaced. The open writing surface is clean, with what appear to be two original brass hinges, though curious patching is noted below flaking each hinge. Above the writing surface is a collection of nine small drawers, the centermost shell carved, each with ... morebrass knobs, below which a gallery of six pigeon holes rest in perfect symmetry. The case has four graduated drawers. Each of which feature period bail pull brass hardware flanking a replaced lock with original brass keyhole escutcheon. The drawers are hand dovetailed front and back, the front dovetails hidden behind applied cockbead molding. The drawers are yellow pine secondaries, the bottom being deeply chamfered along the perimeter to rabbet into the frame. They slide easily in and out of the case over replaced drawer runners, the drawer dividers running into the sides behind a mahogany facade, effectively hiding what are probably dovetail joints. The back of the case has all original backboards, though many nails are replaced. The molded apron features a carved shell drop down medallion in the center that mirrors the design of the middle drawer. The case rests over scroll cut bracket feet, each with an incredible flowing design in the manner of John Chipman. We do not believe the desk was executed in the shop of John Chipman. Vintage School Desk. Bench In Front , Cabinet In Rear Style With Inkwell.
It`s in good to very good shape. Other than some minor cosmetic damage/defects such as scratches and or dirt here and there the only minor thing visibly wrong with it is that when the seat is flipped up it`s a little off. The gap between the seat edge and back is a litle bigger on one side than the other which means somethings bent or out of line. On the seat. Visible mostly only from the underside of it are stress cracks leading out from a couple of the screws holding the wood to the frame. For the most part they aren`t visible on the topside of the seat, only from the underside. Pretty plain styling as far as the ironwork goes. I`m not sure if it`s wrought or cast. I would guess cast. The only markings I could find on this desk I took pictures of. 4L& 4R. Left and right iron sides. See the last two pictures. The woodwork is in good ... moreto very good condition. It may have been oiled. I don`t believe it has ever been refinished as in stained or painted. Doesn`t look to have been sanded either. There are some drip marks on the seat back. It could be water stains of some sort. Condensation from something that dripped on it or a spill that didn`t get cleaned up right away. 7 or 8 five- six inch drip marks. They don`t stand out too bad as there is other dirt to help it blend in. You may be able to study them in picture# 5. Lower righthand side as you face it. Maybe the zoom feature here will show it. Top has an inkwell. I would date this as pre 1950. It did come from a local Catholic School here. Brighton NY to be exact. Thats a suburb of Rochester in case you don`t already know. The former owner could not remember which school it came from. Only that she bought it from her neighbor down the road and it was what she was told. I can tell you though there are a bunch of private schools a stones throw from her house and that Catholic ones are in abundance there from elementary on up. I have a drop front door from a desk insert of a 1790-1810 European Secretaire. It's Mahogan y and the plank is one inch thi ck. Some tri m was missing and veneer coming o ff. So I'm selling the slab as is. for restoration work. I removed the hardware, which is for sale in my other auctions. This auction is for the slab and attached trim only. It measures 43 1/2 inches long, 10 3/4 inches tall and is 1 7/16 inches thi ck. Where the trim and veneer are p resent. The interior slab is one inch thick. W eight is 10 pounds. 4 ounces. Look at the pictures and use the zoom feature to determine if this is what you need. It has two large wood knobs that measure 2 3/8 across. By 2 3/8 tall.
