Mahogany, glazed slide cabinet is the finest I have handled in over 15 years selling antique microscopes and slides. There are 20 drawers, nineteen of which can comfortably hold 48 3" x1" slides. The bottom drawer, No20, is slightly deeper and is not divided, but could comfortably hold another 48 slides. Please note: SLIDES NOT INCLUDED IN THE SALE Condition Report There are various minor issues with this cabinet. Commensurate with it's age and other contemporary examples I have handled: The drawers are all free sliding. With one being a bit stubborn. Some of the original knobs are a little chewed at the edges. With one having a little more than half of the ... moreoriginal pull remaining. All of the drawer bases are pine wood and of sound construction. But each one has a horizontal crack across the width due to shrinkage(see image for a typical example) I would suggest that lining the compartments with paper would be the best way to display slides. The key is missing. So one door springs out a little(perhaps 1cm) from the closed position. This could be remedied by the fitting of a new lock, or perhaps sourcing a key for the existing one(note that the female part of the lock(not present) would also need fitting) The thin moulding strip running down the middle of the two doors has had about 2 inches of restoration at the bottom end. There are two vertical cracks to the thin panel of wood on the back of the cabinet(ie. the side that would face the wall) Patina is very appealing. Along with typical marks and dings, none of which distract from the impressive appearance. All in all. The exercise of patiently filling this magnificent cabinet with suitably fine nineteenth-century mounts would be a very satisfying endeavour. Shires Double Valve Tenor Trombone with Bach 42 Slide Fantastic!
Hi there. Up for auction is my Shires double valve tenor trombone bell and vintage Bach 42 slide. 15 years ago or so I wanted a double valve tenor bell I could use for reduced opera/show productions and to work on my low range. I talked to Steve Shires about it. And he agreed to build me one. I believe this is his only double valve tenor bell, but I am not certain. This is a depended valve system. The second valve is removable and the horn can be played with a single trigger set-up. I've played this horn on operas, shows, and recording sessions, not to mention tons of 8vb Rochuts. About 6 years ago the horn was on a stand and fell over. I sent the bell/valve section back to Shires and it was expertly repaired there. There are a few remaining small dents in the valve tubing and small solder marks, but the horn plays just as it did before ... morethe stand tipping. The bell section, with the magnificent Shires engraving, looks almost new except for a minor scratch/dent not able to be photographed. The bell model is 7YLW and the serial number of the valve section on the slide receiver is 1329. As for the slide. I purchased it in 1987. I've used it professionally since then off and on. It's been a great slide. I'd rate the smoothness at least a 9 out of 10, but I'm very fussy. There is lacquer wear at the normal contact points. Absolutely no wear on the inner stockings. All in all, a great slide in great shape. No case or mouthpiece. When I used this horn. I used a gig bag. I'm not sure if the bell section would fit in a tenor hard case. Really nice playing horn. Please check of the pictures and ask questions. Shipping will be determined at the end of the auction according to shipping location. It will probably be around $60. Antique Georgian Mourning Locket- this is very large. In fact the largest, heaviest one I have ever seen. Locket itself is 65 grams, with chain it comes in over 93 grams. Locket is about 2 1/2 inches X 3 1/2 inches, chain length is approximately 44 inches, slide is 1 inch across. I see gold wear on the back of the slide, little to no gold wear on the locket. I see a few small scratches on the front glass but not real noticeable. Slide moves up and down chain, stays in place when released, probably more Edwardian, there is a soldered piece of chain on one side to help hold the slide in place.
