But I just found that I had stashed twenty of these posters, rolled up, on top of some pipes in the rafters. I opened them, and there are no bugs, no mold, no dirt, so staining– just clear, crisp, brand new posters! The one problem with them, of course, is that they have been rolled up for six or more years, maybe as many as ten years, so they are not going to lay flat, and you are likely to crinkle the poster if you try to roll it in the reverse direction to make it lay flat. I acquired ... morethese from the late Mr. Herb Schroeder. Of Biglerville, Penn. Herb was a feature at a number of antique engine and tractor shows in Pennsylvania and Maryland. He sold tee shirts emblazoned with tractor themes, and tractor manuals he photocopied himself. And I don’t remember the entire story Herb told me, but he was involved to some extent in getting this poster done. I think it was a group effort, with a number of people associated with the Maryland Historical Steam Association in Arcadia. I might not have all the details correct, but this is what I remember. Around 2003, I struck a deal with Herb, to resell his copied tractor manuals. After a few years of doing business together, as I was at Herb’s house picking up an order, he showed me these posters and wanted to know if I would take same and see if they sold. As I recall, I was setting up at the Rough& Tumble Thresherman’s Reunion later that day. The original had a retail price of $200 on it. There is no date I could find anywhere in the catalog. But Emerson-Brantingham bought Reeves in 1912, and the artwork on the cover is typical of Art Noveau, so I would date it in the 1920s. Reeves began building threshers in 1874 and incorporated in 1888. In 1884. Reeves acquired Ritchie& Dyer Co. ... morebuilder of steam traction engines. Reeves were especially adopted for service in the colder climate of Canada, with a full jacket on the boiler and dome helping to retain heat. The Reeves plant was closed by Emerson-Brantingham in 1925, but a few years later, a local banker seeking to preserve the skilled labor force of Columbus, Ind. financed a group of men to reopen the plant and re-work Sears Roebuck gas engines, and enterprise that eventually became The Cummins Engine Co. Twin brothers of Winthrop, Maine, conceived of and developed a treading mill with a common fanning mill, in the early 1830s, bringing out their first portable threshing machine in 1834. They continued to improve their design ... moreand in 1837 obtained their first patent for the first real working apron threshing machine. In 1840 a soon thereafter, they moved the business to Buffalo, NY, and the Buffalo-Pitts threshing machine achieved renown through-out the United States and overseas. After John Pitts died in 1859, his brother Hiram moved on to other business interests in Chicago, but by then the business had been incorporated, and continued without the two brothers. Buffalo-Pitts began building steam traction engines in the 1880s, and by the late 1890s, the company was firmly in place as a leading maker, with a reputation for excellence of materials and craftsmanship, and simplicity of design. Here is a reproduction of an extremely rare catalog of Russell Steam Road Locomotives. These are NOT the steam traction engines designed and built for farm use. Though I for one cannot tell the difference just looking at the pictures. According to Jack Norbeck, in his exhaustive Encyclopedia of American Steam Traction Engines. for strength on the road or under the belt, a Russell steam engine“had no equal. The large driving gave it great leverage, the patented double ported ring-balanced valve; ... morethe patented adjustable reverse and valve gear; cast iron smoke box; steel horn plates carrying the cross shaft; the best boiler made(so they said) engine bed and cylinder cast in one piece; the platform bail that would hold the entire weight engine; all these certainly put the Russell Engine in a class by itself. Norbeck further notes that“The Russell steam traction engine was built as simply as possible. All parts were accessible. All moving parts were in plain view and and any parts requiring adjustments were within easy reach with ordinary tools. The very important matter of lubrication had been thoroughly looked after. All wearing parts were ample for service required and provided with means of adjustment. Russell& Co. was established in January 1842 as a general carpentry shop. Including the local building of houses as well as furniture and other household and farm items. At some point, the firm began building threshing machines. Northwest Thresher Co. disappeared long before its history could be written. When it was purchased by M. Rumely Company in 1912. What little that is known about Northwest Thresher is gleaned from Professor Reynold Wik’s 1953 book. Steam Power on the American Farm. In 1912. When Northwest Thresher was bought by Rumely, the firm was producing the ... moremost powerful traction engines in the country, at 51 horsepower. The biggest sold by Gaar Scott, Port Huron, Russell, Advance, Geiser, Rumely, Avery, and Reeves was 40 horsepower. Only Frick Co. came close, with a traction engine rated at 50 horsepower. In one demonstration in Stillwater, Northwest Thresher hitched one of its 51 horsepower beasts to a string of ten dead engines weighing over 133 tons, and pulled them all around the town. The feat was recorded in American Thresherman in its issue of June 1907. At the Wisconsin State Fair in 1906. Northwest Thresher demonstrated the fine sensitivity of the throttle on its 16 horsepower single cylinder traction engine by running the engine partway up a plank, then placing an egg immediately in front of the drive wheel. The engineer then moved the traction engine forward just enough to crack to shell, then reversed down the plank, without crushing or breaking open the egg.
