The black surface is a material and there is a small tear under the drip tray and this allows the black to be loose. This is an easy repair for the cosmetics. You will also see two different heat knobs, one for each side. This is very important too! In every restaurant you are preparing a variety of foods. This allows you to keep the sides at different temperatures so that you can be cooking both just right and at the same time. When you receive this item please plug it in and let it heat up. Clean it with warm water and then use a BBQ brush to coat with oil and let that cook off, wipe off with a grill brush and you are ready to use it for food.
