This scrapbook started life as a book- SECOND GEOLOGICAL SURVEY: OIL WELL RECORDS AND LEVIES( J. F. Carll, 1877; most of the pages are completely covered but a few of them are bare enough to show the original printing, and you can read part of the title on the remains of the spine, as well. I think most of the articles. Etc. are from the early 1880's, but some are earlier. There is one clipping that mentions"The late President, and says, Four years ago President Lincoln. This is on one of the first few pages, so I surmise that somebody started by putting in old, saved clippings. On one of the pages that is not covered by clippings. Someone has pencilled, Inez Lear's Book. Belle gave to Inez. Grandmother Durfer( pasted poems in book. Most of the clippings are poems or anecdotes(as opposed to news articles) Some are amusing. Some ... moreare uplifting or touching. One of the poems is the song"Maggie: I wandered to-day to the hill. Maggie, To watch the scene below; The creek and the creaking old mill. Maggie, As we used to long ago. The green grove is gone from the hill. Maggie. Where first the daisies spring; The creaking old mill is still. Maggie, Since you and I were young. And now we are aged and gray. Maggie, And the trials of life nearly odne; Let us sing of the days that are gone. Maggie. When you and I were young. The title isn't there. Nor the author's name, but there are two more verses. I've heard the song sung(beautifully) by John McDermott, and this has one more verse than I knew. In some sections every other page has been cut out. Leaving just the inner margin; perhaps so that pasting the articles in wouldn't make the pages so fat that the book would no longer close. As you can see from the photos I've posted. There are several pictures and such included. Besides the ones of Lincoln, Grant, Buchanan, Washington there are also: a colored picture of a man who looks like Atlas. But holding up, instead of the globe, a giant red tomato. a colored picture of a stag. a picture of

Selling are 2 magazine article from 1935: Subtitled“Mysterious Temples and Tombs. Carved in Glowing Cliffs of Eroded Sandstone, Are Remnants of a City David Longed to Storm” Quoting the first pages“Petra. Silent city of the forgotten past, halfway between the Dead Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba, exerts a magic spell upon the minds of those fortunate enough to know it. Its single and weird approach, through a deep rock cleft more than a mile long; its temples, numbering nearly a thousand, cut into the living rock of stupendous cliffs and showing Babylonian, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman influence; its high places, courts, libation basins, and altars where the ancients worshiped; its amazing color, the work of Nature lavish with ocher and all shades of red-all these are mysterious, enthralling. The rose-red city. Half as old as time, has a history ... morethat began long before histories were written. Near it have been found worked flints of the Late Chellean period, millenniums before recorded dates. Its first written history is found in the Bible; for the land about it was Mount Seir of old(now Esh Shera) Home of the Horites, cave dwellers whose progenitor was Hori, the grandson of Seir(Gen. 36: 20) These Horites are first mentioned at the time of Abraham in connection with the subjugation of the land by Chedorlaomer(Gen. 14: 5-6) Abraham had two sons: Isaac. Father of the Hebrews in Canaan(Gen. 25: 19-26) and Ishmael, of whom it was said, he will be a wild man" Gen. 16: 12) From Ishmael sprang the Nabateans, a Bedouin people. When Isaac's two sons. Jacob and Esau, quarreled, Esau migrated with his family and flocks to Mount Seir(Esh Shera) and became the progenitor of the Edomites(Gen. 36: 6-8) These were bitter enemies of the Hebrews, the descendants of Jacob's twelve sons. Saul fought against the Edomites(I Sam. 14: 47) David subdued them, garrisoned their country, and dedicated their gold and silver, presumably for the use of the future temple at Jerusalem(II Sam. 8: 14 and I Chron. 18: 11-13) an

Selling are 2 magazine articles from 1939: This article is about Bermuda. Lots of history plus present-day(1939) happenings. Neat info on the Pan-Am Clipper flight Quoting the first page“One brisk spring day I walked down a long gangplank at Port Washington to the float where the red-winged Bermuda Clipper was moored. With a score of other passengers I went aboard through a hatchway near the tail. Each of us was assigned to a seat preselected according to our weight. The engines opened up with a roar that became a dull. Steady whine as we lifted gracefully from the surface and wheeled over Long Island. Climbing steadily, we soared above country estates, truck farms, and finally the narrow strip of white sand that was to be our last sight of land until we raised Bermuda's outer reefs, nearly 77 5 miles southeast. After the first half hour's ... morenovelty of looking down 9.000 feet on a sun- and cloud-dappled sea, most of the passengers began to read, and one or two dozed. Presently the steward spread the table for luncheon. A four-course meal that included olives and celery, hot mushroom soup, chicken a la Maryland, salad and ice cream, followed by coffee and mints. This is the famous"300-mile luncheon"the distance covered during the serving. The big Sikorsky(S42 B) plane rode so steadily that not a drop was spilled. For some time after lunch the sea was hidden by an undulating blanket of gray vapor. But once, when the clouds opened up, we saw the liner Queen of Bermuda plowing a white track through the blue sea. From our dizzy height the 22,000-ton vessel seemed a toy ship. The Queen left New York yesterday afternoon and she reaches Bermuda tomorrow morning. the steward told us. Breaking through a mottled ceiling of clouds. We saw far ahead of us a dark patch on the horizon, Bermuda. But my gaze was drawn irresistibly below, for we were now over the outer reefs, those dread barriers in the days of early sailing ships and later Bermuda's bulwark against marauding pirates and privateers. There was s

3 articles about modern(1918! shipbuilding in the USA. Mainly about steel warships but some commercial and concrete ships too. Title: Ships for the Seven Seas Author: Ralph A Graves Subtitled“The Story of America's Maritime Needs. Her Capabilities and Her Achievements” Quoting the first page“The human mind cannot conceive of millions; to most of us even tens of thousands convey no concrete idea save that of a numeral and four ciphers. Let this. Then, be a story of America's ships and American shipbuilding in the language of units. Our merchant fleets. Already created and those to be, are the great, pulsing arteries supplying our armies abroad with all that constitutes the life-blood of fighting forces-food, clothing, ammunition, machine-guns, artillery, locomotives, airplanes, ambulances, reinforcements! Ships in sufficiency spell ... morevictory. And to make that victory sure the American Government has authorized the United States Shipping Board to expend. As quickly as it can pay men for labor and material, a sum nine times as large as the value of all the gold and silver produced by all the mines of the earth during the year 1916; a sum nearly fifteen times as great as the cost of the Panama Canal; more than seven times as much as the original vast appropriation for our airplane program. When that sum is exhausted as much more will be placed at the disposal of the Shipping Board. Provided the ships are forthcoming in numbers never before built in the same length of time by any nation, or by all the nations of the world combined. Quantity of production, quality of production, and speed of production constitute the supreme aim of the shipbuilding program in the minds of Americans today; the cost is secondary and for subsequent consideration. Why the quantity and why the haste? The answer lies in the historic fact that two million American soldiers are now in France fighting for the cause of a free world. And in the historic promise that by next July that number will have swelled to four million. Every individua

Hello& Welcome, Here's a wonderful edition of the April. 1895"The Cosmopolitan" illustrated monthly magazine that's in VERY GOOD condition. Actually, for being 106 years old I think it's in great condition, but I'm not an expert. It measures approximately 10" by 7" The pictures are of the front, inside cover, back, backside cover and of the binding edge. Full of interesting articles, beautiful illustrations/art and great old advertisements. It contains approximately 150 pages(the first numbered page is 644 and the last numbered page is page 768 and then there's approximately 20-30 pages of advertisements that aren't numbered) Though a little rough around the edges there's no loose pages and the binding is in fair condition. As may be seen in the photo's the binding should be re-glued ... moreas it's coming loose. This is still a very nice old magazine. Should you like more photo's or have any questions, please ask. Thank you for stopping by and please visit my store for many other finer things when you get time. PS-I will also gladly ship internationally but please contact me first before bidding/purchasing for an accurate shipping cost as it may be lower. Or higher than what's listed. The buyer's also responsible for any import fees/duties/etc. should there be any. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
Kept in storage for decades. Pages look untouched. No damage and barely any signs of aging. This is a 1970 reprint of a 1929 catalogue. Most of the book is images of advertisements.
