Tuesday Entertainment: Maine, and a new bamboo fly rod book

By Tom Chandler 8/1/2006

The Crazy Time is almost upon me - it's the week before the Shasta Summit Century bike ride, and since I'm the Ride Director, people actually expect me to show up and run the thing. There's still a chance for an evening of fishing, but river time will surely be at a premium this week.

The good news? The LT Nancy and I are heading to Maine in early September. I'd invite all my readers to come along, but frankly, some of you seem like the type who'd show up without beer and then plunder our entire stock of Doritos, forcing us to forage for smallmouth bass, grubs, and whatever we could find at the tiny grocery store 20 minutes away. I'm just not up for that extreme a survival situation.

But enough about me. On with the Underground Entertainment.
For those who are still looking for a little summer reading, George Black has written a new book about the history of the bamboo fly rod in the USA. I haven't received one yet, but the reviews make it sound interesting indeed.

The always interesting bunch of supreme outdoor geeks (and we mean that in the nicest way) at GetOutdoors actually mentioned the Trout Underground by name (in reference to a post about fishing in Alaska), which naturally causes me to ask the following: What the heck have they been smoking? Still, we'll take the link, post a semi-snarky comment on their blog (feel free to do the same should you find yourself over there), and move along.

I first mentioned the Ranger Gord blog a short time ago, but I checked it again today and there's more great stuff! Now you can read about severed hands and chainsaws, urban gang problems in parks, and a bear story (always a bear story). I think it's a blog worth bookmarking.
