The Good, the Bad, and the Linked

By Tom Chandler 6/7/2006

I'm laying words end-to-end in an ongoing attempt to stave off a visit from Guido, but in the spirit of embracing diversity, I wanted to invite our Underground Lurkers to post comments. The Trout Underground visitor numbers continue to grow rapidly, and though our readership is peanuts compared to the really big sites, for a blog written largely by a whacked-out writer in a remote part of the country, it's not bad at all. So have some fun. Let us know how the fishing's been. And remember - 1/3 of US companies read their employee's outgoing e-mail, but hardly any of them monitor the Trout Underground for your comments...

For those with a bent for controversial topics (who, us?), here's an interesting essay from the Flyfishingwalkabouts blog about indicator fishing, where he asks the question - is the indicator a useful tool that's become a lazy shortcut?

Then, the ever-weird Moldy Chum links to a video titled the Belly Boat Hustle. I have this on video tape (thanks to the efforts of my Alert Older Brother Scott
), but wanted to share it with the Underground's huddled masses. You'll want to buy a pair of ballet slippers.

For those with a few extra bucks and a yen for tropical climates in the depths of winter, Ian Rutter is organizing a trip to the Bonefish Heaven that is Belize's Turneffe Flats. You can read about his prior Turneffe Flats bonefish trip here. I can think of a lot of things that might really bite, but catching lots of bonefish in February isn't one of them.

Also, a reminder to everyone that the Upper Sacramento River Exchange - an organization worth supporting - is still offering three days of fishing for six anglers at CalTrout's private Upper Sac fishing camp. Includes meals, fulltime camp host, two nights, and fishing help when time permits, and at less than $112/day per angler, it's a steal. Read the information here, and then call the Upper Sac River Exchange at 520.235.2012.

Other hot links include a bunch of good, funny stories at The Flyfish magazine, more fly fishing fun (and adventures with cows) in Scotland from Urban Flyfishing the Kelvin;and some good news for Yellowstone anglers (hint: the stoneflies are out). Finally, a wader story that tries to end the "fill your waders and you'll sink like a stone" myth that irritates me to no end.

Are we done? Not on your life; there's still the witty Collateral Damage, who posted this entry about the legal perils of Being Barbie. Apparently, a Canadian judge has dissed the Mighty Plastic Blonde Bimbette...

The sun's shining, the clouds are puffy, the slaw dogs are cooking... it's another perfect day on the Trout Underground. Lemme know what you're thinking. See you here, Tom Chandler.

As the author of the decade leading fly fishing blog Trout Underground, Tom believes that fishing is not about measuring the experience but instead of about having fun. As a staunch environmentalist, he brings to the Yobi Community thought leadership on environmental and access issues facing us today.

On the Upper Sac? River's dropped a little to 2700, which is still awfully high. Been reports of a very few stoneflies and some Pink Alberts - neither of which I saw when I fished the river last Thursday. It's all about the softer edges, and I can think of two places where there might be a shot at some dry fly fishing. You might consider the McCloud, or bringing your float tubes and trying Lake Siskiyou. ... more Good luck!
