Interesting lot of old doorknob rosettes escutcheons for your consideration. I am not sure of what there original use was for because of there smaller size. I am guessing they were an early doorknob application from entry doors in homes. They might have been an early furniture backplate as well. Could be used either way I suppose depending on your need. No manufacturing marks. There is a very small amount of original copper Jappanning still evident on a couple of these which I think were there original finish. There are ten in this lot measuring an unusual smaller size at 1 1/2 inches across. Center holes are 3/8 of an inch. large enough for a standard 1/4 inch mortise driverod. These are in very nice condition. All the seating cleats are intact with no break or cracks. These would work nicely on cabinet or furniture resoration as well. Nice lot of four matching cast iron doorknob keyhole backplates for your consideration. these were aquired with locksets where the lock faceplates had the bluebird or swallow pattern on them. I think these might have been the original plates for that design. Although I am not sure since I can not cross reference the manufacture catalog number on the back of each. Which is 5940. Measure 5 3/8 x 1/12 inches. 2 1/4 inch from ctr of knob to ctr of skeleton key barrel. A nice lot of harder to find Early period Victroian Eastlake cast iron backplates. All the plates are in good condition and I suspect that they might even clean up nicely to the original copper Jappanned finish, since they appear to have quite a bit of old varnish that would have protected them over the many years of service. Description Up fro bids is a single screw-in type door knob in lovely deep forest green glass. The 2 1/4" diameter knob is octagonal with a 1 1/4" raised circular center. The knob is set in a gray metal. Possibly pewter or zinc, which has a 1 1/2" diameter back. The screw projects from the back and would screw 1" into the door. Antique Colonial Cast Bronze Exterior Entry Door Set Lockset Knob Plate Lock Key
Penn Antique Restoration. Antique Colonial Style Cast Bronze Entry Door Set Lockset. Elegant. Original, antique, exterior door lockset salvaged from Southeastern PA. The set includes 2 bronze knobs, 1 large bronze escutcheon with swinging keyhole cover, 1 bronze rosette, 1 bronze keyhole cover, 1 iron mortise lock with bronze faceplate, 1 working key, 1 bronze strike plate for the door jamb, and 1 spindle with 2 set screws. All bronze parts are solid, heavy, cast bronze. At the point of salvage all parts were dirty. Partially painted, and unevenly tarnished(see last photo) Since then, we've cleaned and polished all parts to the best of our ability. You could tell that the hardware came from a well-maintained home because the set is in great shape! The parts have nicks and scratches. Which are typical for hardware this old, but no breaks, ... morecracks, gouges, or chips. The lock was opened. Inspected, and WD-40 was sprayed on and around all parts to facilitate their movement. A key was made especially for this lock, and we could make more for $6/key—let us know if you are interested. After the auction. Someone removed the buttons from the lock faceplate. The buttons controlled a function. Which disabled/enabled the knobs to turn. With the knobs unable to turn, the upper latch remains extended, in the locked position. In essence, both latches would act as deadbolts and provide extra security. Once the knobs are frozen, and the door is shut, the only way to retract the upper latch is by using the key for the top keyhole. I'm certain that whoever removed the buttons, didn't have the key for the top keyhole and he/she had to force the door open in order to push the button, to enable the knobs to turn. If this were my set, I would remove the buttons as well, and this is not only because I'm a parent of a young child who couldn't help himself from playing with the buttons; but accidents do happen. This auction is for two(2) matching antique decorative door knob backing plates. I don’t know when they were made. But they were previously in a house that was built in 1924. I don’t know for certain if they were original to the house. As I was not the original owner, but I believe that they were. The plates are about 9 inches long. And have holes for the door knob, key, and mounting screws. The backs of the plates have markings for“Sargent& Co” and“485 RM" imprinted on each one.
