You are viewing a fine early set of original hand forged slave shackles. These are original artifacts. Found in West Africa. These have been in a personal private collection for years. These were most likely made in Europe and brought to Africa by slave traders who used them for restraining the Africans while in transit. Overall length: 12" Condition: Complete original as found. Rust patinated surface which has not been cleaned. Good solid condition. Will clean nicely but we leave these artifacts as we find them. Similar examples were found on the slave ship Henrietta Marie by the Mel Fisher's Treasure Salvors. Inc. They are on view in their fabulous museum in Key West Florida. These item are unsigned and undated. Believed to be early 19th Century as the trade in slaves were abolished in 1807. In Britain. They appear to have been broken/ forced open at some point, and are marked with a series of the letter C`s? Approx 19" long. The owner who was in his late 60's told me that his father had found them about 50 years ago in the woods while hunting. These are most likely leg irons because of the length of the chain. The piece was rusted/pitted& must have been cleaned years ago. I don't see any markings. There is no key but I am sure the right person can pick the lock. The only think wrong with shackles is that the chain was locked inside of the one iron so both will not lay down flat for display.
