Antique Anheuser Busch Tavern Beer Sign 1890 Painted Wood Americana Breweriana
What can we say but wow one of the most incredible pieces of Breweriana we have ever seen. This is an incredible Anheuser Busch Tavern trade sign from 1890. The sign is painted on hand planed boards that are tongue and grove joined. There are 11 boards. Each one hand made to make this sign. The sign is hand painted for a beer and liquor distributor and seller in Manchester, New Hampshire. The distributor was a liquor dealer and bottler in business in the late 1800's well into the 1900's. This sign hung outside their place of business probably until prohibition. The Joseph G. Plante& Co. switched to selling grocery items during prohibition and the sign was tucked away in the store attic. That is where it was found recently. The logo was used by Anheuser Busch from 1890 to 1920 according to their company web site. There are a couple ... moreof very interesting things about this sign. The name across the top"Joseph G. Plante& Co. is actually painted over another name. Which means that there was another owner prior to Plante. This is an interesting fact as it means the sign is actually older than the Plante Co. We think that the sign painter signature at the bottom is the person that over-painted the original owners name. Interesting that New Hampshire began prohibition in 1917. Consequently this sign was more than likely removed and packed away in that year. New Hampshire has a long history of brewing. Though the recent microbrewing movement has been somewhat slower to catch on here than in neighboring states. 2] There is evidence of brewing at. Now. As early as 1635, with most beer being brewed at taverns for the next two centuries. These signs were used in the field as a replacement for a damaged board so the sign man did not have to make two trips out on the highways of America. Almost all of them said Burma Shave like shown in photos in two different placements on the same sign so he could use whichever side fit the set he was fixing. The sign measures 17 X 40 just like the later version of the Burma Shave Boards when the cars went faster. It seems to be made of heavy steel. The sign alone weighs 16 pounds. 1930's Hostess Large Cardboard Advertising Sign"Now At Your Grocers Hostess Old Fashioned Short cake" Sign is 44" X 32" This sign was made to be hung in a store that sold Hostess products way back when. The sign has some dirt and some edge wear especially at the corners. There is a 3.5 inch tear by the bowl to the left. I think it's in excellent plus condition since it's made of thick cardboard and wasn't suppose to last over 70 years and these signs were thrown out when the promotion was over. This sign has great color. Must not have been left in a window that had the sun exposed to it. Even has a NRA stamp to the left for some reason. You just don't see too much vintage advertising from Hostess. This item is too big and delicate to ship, it must be picked up in East Windsor New Jersey 08520.
