You are bidding on one of the first lighted Hotels ever made. It is super rare and very difficult to find. I believe it is from a 1903 or earlier. These type of signs pre-dated neon signs by twenty five years. This sign once graced a building in the Downtown Seattle Pioneer area. I also believe the other part of the sign. The part that listed the business name, is on display on the Seattle Underground tour, I believe the Sign once said Hotel Sam’s. Search Sam’s for Seattle Underground and the style, age, look and patina matches. The sign letters are in good condition for its age. This sign is 101 years old. The letters are all original. They are real porcelain and have the original steel mounting hardware bracket behind the letters. It was a“flag” mounted type sign that extended perpendicular off the side of the building. The letters have ... moresome patina characteristics, but they could clean up it they were polished. I’ll leave that decision up to the buyer. The original porcelain light bulb sockets are missing but they can still be easily obtained and do fit into the original holes. I can order and install the original sockets and wire them up for you, so the sign can look like the last photo where the sign is lite up. Ask about this before you bid. The letters do have a few scratches and minor dings on them. But nothing that distracts from the sign. The letters are still are in good shape. The letters were designed to be mounted so the light bulbs in from of the letters would light up the letters and the sign. The sign was designed to be“flag” mounted and the sign would be extended perpendicular off the side of the building held in place by"guide" cables to keep the sign in place. This is an all original 1903 all metal commercial letter sign. The kind that used to be mounted on buildings that ad versed the Hotels in town. ORIGINAL 1950'S OR 1960'S VINTAGE RAMBLER AUTOMOBILE DOUBLE SIDED NEON SIGN
I am a 77 year old retired automobile dealer. In 1996 I semi-retired from Georgia to West Virginia. The state of my birth. I chose the small town of Marlinton to be my new home. I was specializing in vintage cars at the time so I bought the building that used to house the RAMBLER automobile dealership for my business. The building came with the original RAMBLER neon sign out front. It was in poor condition so I had it taken down and professionally refurbished. Including adding protective clear plastic on both sides to keep the neon tubes safe. When I sold the building in 2010 I kept the sign for myself. I wanted to save it from the elements so I stored it at my home. I have been told by the company that refurbished it that signs are no longer made like this one. It has sheet metal that is smoothly held together by rivets. Both sides of the ... moresign light up in brilliant red and I have tried to take good pictures of it lit up even though it is on its side at my home. The other picture is what it looked like when it was on the building. I was told by old time local residents that it was on that building from the late 1950's or very early 1960's. 1930's Midland Chemical Laboratories Neon Sign Light Dubuque, Iowa John Deere
Up for sale is a very rare and old original Midland Laboratories lighted sign. Purchased from a family member who used to work in the chemical plant. She said this exact sign was hanging in the plant for as long as she could remember. By the age of the wood, it looks to me to have been custom built in the 1930s-1940s when the company had its offices in Dubuque Iowa since 1907. Everything on the wooden frame and lettering looks to be original, however I believe the lighting on the inside has been replaced at some point, the power cord looks basically new. It looks to be some sort of neon on the inside, but I have not attempted to open the back of the sign. The yellow front of the frame is made from a thick plastic-like material. The John Deere green and yellow coloring look pretty cool when the sign is lit! There is a pull chain that turns ... morethe sign on and off. I do have mounting chains that came with the sign as well. Measures a very large 51in x 12in x 9in. A google search describes the selling of the company in 1972. In the early 1970’s. An active acquisition program began and numerous companies and janitor supply businesses throughout the United States were purchased. One of the most significant early purchases was the 1972 acquisition of Midland Laboratories, located in Dubuque, Iowa. Midland Laboratories was an established, well-respected firm in the Midwest United States, and the merger of the two companies gave Rochester Germicide an expanded small package line of chemical products as well as an even greater involvement with insecticides. This is a complete set of original GULF channel letters. They came off the canopy over the Gulf gas pumps at the station. They are meant to be lighted but presently none of them light up. They letter"G" has broken neon inside. All the other letters seem to be OK. Neon wise, but they do not light. All four letters have their own transformer. There are no cracks or chips on the plastic and only a few minor scratches which can be seen in the photos. These letters can be either mounted horozontally or vertically. If you do not want to spend the money to have them repaired so that they light up, then they can be mounted as is and they look great even when not lit.
