US Slicing Machine Company Berkel Model C Vintage Meat Slicer
This is a really cool old hand crank US Slicing Machine Company/Berkel Model C meat slicer from the late 1930's I believe. It was made in La Porte. Indiana(as it sort of says on the crank) It is in fantastic mechanical condition for its age. I'm no expert on these machines/this was purchased from an estate sale, but here's what I can tell you about it: The BAD: The paint doesn't look too hot. It appears to have been repainted(non-professionally) some years ago. And both layers of paint are flaking off. This includes the logos. It actually says"Model C" on the side of the tower, but it's very hard to see in the pics. The milk glass meat-catching tray is gone. From what I understand. However, these aren't too hard to find. It looks like there's some type of small knob missing from the chrome mechanism directly ... moreabove the meat tray. I'm not even sure what it's supposed to look like. As it was hard to find pics of this somewhat rare model. One of the grinding stones is chipped on the edge. Replacements aren't too hard to find. Sharpener mechanism is a little stiff. But would probably loosen up easily. Blade shroud looks to have been tig welded near the end some time ago. But is solid. The GOOD: IT WORKS! Quite beautifully. Actually. All mechanisms, knobs, and adjustments seem to work as intended. Meat holding tray ratchets/indexes forward just as it should. These things are quite fascinating to watch. I have done nothing to try and restore it. As to keep it as original as possible. Only a light coating of WD-40 has been applied to the mechanisms for lubrication and to prevent further oxidation. This would be an excellent candidate for restoration. It wouldn't take a whole lot. Really.paint, chrome plating, and some polishing should fix it right up. I'm not certain of the manufacturing date. I am able to turn the blade by hand, so I'm ... morenot sure if the problem is with the motor or maybe the gears. It has cosmetic marks, grime, oxidation, etc. from age and previous use. One screw and knob part has been replaced with a contemporary nut and bolt. The slicer comes with what looks like either the original or a replacement(see picture) Also, the blade guard has a repair on it as shown. The slicer is being sold as-is, for parts or repair. Please see the pictures for more details. My research indicates the dataplate for this slicer was originally where the power switch is. This slicer has had its switch replaced some time ago. And the dataplate is now lost. I looked around online and I think it's a model 150, but I'm not sure about that. It may have had a higher number, up to Model 285. But the examples I saw online that are Model 150 all look very much like this slicer, more than the other models I found. Again, I'm not totally sure. I found sources for parts online. This is exquisite! First and Foremost please WATCH THE VIDEO! Pictures do not do this thing justice. I have taken the machine apart, cleaned every part, making the machine fully functional and in working order. I did not do a restoration, as I left the original patina/paint as-is, because I think it completely adds to the character of this piece! This is stamped in a few spots with different model numbers such as#VBP which is located on the Van Berkel brass tag. It is also stamped 2002A on the inside of the wheel. In addition there is a tag that I have photographed that reads B5975. Last patent date on this machine is July 15, 1919. This listing is for a very nice. Working antique meat slicer. Was recently purchased from a local rancher who was using it up to the point he sold it. I believe this is a 1920s or so machine. Still has a lot of the original red paint. The white enamel tray that the meat falls into is removeable. It has adjustments from paper thin to 1/2" It has a built in blade sharpener that works very well. When running its is very quiet with no unusual sounds. The motor is 1/4 hp and the blade spins at 1725 rpms. Very nice, useable slicer. Perfect for hunters or home butchers. Its measurements are 26" long x 16" high x 22" wide.
