Remarkably, the original stopper has remained with the bottle, with the cork intact. The cork is chipped a bit, and the bottom edge of the pottery is uneven, but it is not chipped. CALIFORNIA. 19th Century Length Diameter: 2 1/4" Width Diameter: 1 3/4" Thick: 1" Weight: 3.4 oz This is THE SECOND DONUT STONE found about 6 miles northwest of San Luis Obispo. California. On a secondary road leading to Morro Bay. This peculiar ring stone was uncovered in the 19th century along the banks of Charro Creek. An early resident stopped along the way to water his horses when he saw this stone(and another recently listed) partially exposed. The stone. Part of a large collection, had been in the same family for generations until a recent acquisition. This is a small. Oval-shaped holed stone. It is nicely crafted with somewhat smooth. Rounded outer sides/edges leading to a center hole. It is marked with many abrasion streaks. Remnants of a black patina still exist along ... moresections of this intriguing artifact. As mentioned above. This type of artifact has been called a"donut stone" because of its peculiar similarity to the modern pastry. Others have called it a ceremonial ring stone. They've been found throughout the southern California coastal region and their true purpose is completely unknown-though many scholars have heated interpretations about their function. Several of these donut stones were excavated a few years ago near the present Marina del Rey-the exit point to the early Baloona Creek marsh. There. Some were found associated with shaman implements, suggesting the stones were part of some ritualistic tribal ceremony. Others. However, believe these ring stones were banners, weapons, or used as some type of spindle. After years of examining these strange stones. I lean towards the ceremonial/spiritual camp as evidence of their usage in other categories is sparse. Vintage 1960s Winchell's Donut Box Search Here's something that doesn't come around very often: a vintage Winchell's donut box from the 1960s. This was found packed in my aunt and uncle's basement when they sold their large home some 25 year ago. They always had a box of Winchell's donuts sitting on their kitchen counter. I have such fond memories of Winchell's as a kid back in the 1960s. I don't know the exact year. But am guessing mid- to late 1960s. The box notes they had 185 locations. By the 1970s, they had grown to over 1000 locations. The box shows its age-it is darkened somewhat in color and has various small tears and creases. The lid is creased and folds down just a bit.
