The battery is dead so I can not test it but it was working fine last time I used it. I removed the battery and the battery area is not corroded at all. This is a vintage Dayton Pilot steel tennis racquet. The frame and the strings are steel. The handle is wooden. The frame. Strings and handle all show signs of wear, while all the strings are intact. On the side of the handle is a perfectly legible, barely worn, painted label that measures 1 1/2 inches by 1/2 inch and that reads"Pilot $8.50 Guarantee 2 months. A small metal logo had been affixed to the front of the handle but it fell off. The spot where it had been affixed is visible in the photograph. I will send it in an envelope with the racquet. It was carried on board ship by the pilot guiding the ship into harbor. So he would have an independent compass. Beautiful condition and fully functional, it has a floating head compass that is protected by a mag nifying lens. It is cased in copper that has developed a rich patina over the years. It has a very early serial number- 282! This was one of the very early ones. Don't know the exact age. Stands 7 1/8" tall by 6" square. Weighs 7 1/2 pounds. Case closes tightly when not in use. This Sheet No.2. Series C. Published by the United States Hydrographical Office in Washington DC. Measures 245" x 37.5" and printed on medium weight paper. Somewhere between fair to good condition with foxing. Soiling, some edge roughness, and a small amount of creasing. Within a frame. This would be quite presentable. Pilot 3 inch TV Model TV 37- Restored and Working
In 1949 Pilot Radio and Television introduced a 21 tube television set that sold for $99. The first one to break the $100 barrier. The first versions had the 3KP4 CRT wired in series with the filaments of the other tubes. Consequently, the 3KP4 tube filament would glow brightly until the other tubes warmed up. This caused many premature CRT failures until the factory produced the Model TV 37U utilizing a ballast tube. I have restored probably a dozen of both models and came up with a solution to the failure on earlier sets. That is to install a 6.3 volt filament transformer and put a 15 ohm 20 watt wire wound resistor in the filament circuit(see partial schematic from Riders TV 2) Now I know there are these brilliant people who say to install a glow bar resistor instead of a transformer. My answer is try to find one that will work, transformers ... moreare more readily available and inexpensive. Restoring a pilot set is not an easy one. Virtually all of the capacitors including the high voltage ones have to be replaced. I found out most if not all of the carbon resistors have to be replaced too. My rule of thumb on the resistors is to replace them if over 10% out of tolerance. I replaced 7 tubes with new old stock. Cabinet is nice shape with no major flaws and there is also a new interlock cord installed just like the original was. As you can see from the photos the result of a lot of work I did for a friend who is now deceased. The Pilot TV sets are not as bright and contrasty as your new flat screen TV's. Since there is only about 2kv on the high voltage you have to view in a room without a lot of glare so don't be disappointed as it is not a LCD. The actual photos were not as sharp as I would have liked because of the 12mp camera's inability to focus. In addition. You will have to use a digital converter to view analog broadcasts. When viewing broadcasts, too much contrast will cause the vertical and horizontal sync to be erratic. There is a reserve on this set but not a ridiculous one. Payment is by Pay P

James Howell Howard[1913 1995] was a general in the United States Air Force and the only fighter pilot in the European Theater of Operations in World War II to be awarded the Medal of Honor. He earned his wings in 1938 as a Navy pilot flying off the USS Enterprise and left the Navy to become a P-40 pilot with the[AVG] American Volunteer Group Flying Tigers. In 1942. He returned as a major and commanded the 356th Fighter Squadron in the 354th Fighter Group based in England.
