Antique GE Pancake AC Electric Motor 1/6 HP 1800 RPM 100 Years Old Runs
I was repairing electric motors back in the 70's. And when I saw this one, it was so unusual I had to save it! I'll give you the technical details. The nameplate says 1/6 HP, 110V, 60 cycles, 1800 RPM, type DSS, and on the bottom in fine print are patent dates 1901 and 1911. If you google GE type DSS electric motor. You'll find articles in GE review and leading magazines of the day describing it's"drawn shell" construction. Overall diameter is about 7.5 inches, and it weighs about 38 lbs. It is split-phase. With windings on the stator and a squirrel-cage rotor; as with later ones. But the really interesting part is the starting switch. It has one carbon brush and one slip ring, the other contact is spring-loaded arms that lift off another slip ring when sufficient speed is reached. I've never seen anything else ... morelike it! To test it, I connected alligator clips by the back end bell, where start and run windings each have separate connections brought out. I did the bare minimum to test it, so that the buyer may do whatever restoration they wish. As usual with used unrestored electrical items, this is sold as-is, no refunds, returns, or exchanges.
