Thank You Jl2695. It's by no means a sure thing I just calculated the density by dividing the weight by it's volume. The sample ingot I measured weighed 172 grams and volume = 18.13 cm3 so density was roughly 9.48 g/cm3. Lead = 11.3 g/cm3. Zinc casting ingots. Pre-consumer scrap, from industrial process, the manufacture of lock cylinders(door locks) rejected before assembly, but all one zinc alloy. Most of this type of product is spin-cast or pressure-cast with Zamak 3 series casting alloy. These were electric-enclosed kiln-melted(ceramic kiln) to control drossing and provide clean liquid metal. An open melt by gas results in a large loss from process oils and oxidation. At least the initial melting of any scrap. Ingots melt cleaner. Cover the melting pot to preserve metal from oxygen in the air. These ingots will cast well! Lock cylinders are finely detailed and smooth. Due to the alloy employed. Fine pour-casting probably requires high heat to achieve this. These ingots were melted at only slightly higher than melting point and poured quickly in my attempt to preserve the ... moreintegrity of the alloy. Zinc has a huge specific heat, 3 times that of lead, so although they melt only 150 degrees or so higher than lead, they store a large amount of heat before changing state. melt! Molds should be hot, and allowed to cool slowly to achieve great detail in the product, without crystallizing or shrinking. Lead is easier to cast by far! My experience says advanced casters with experience in zinc will do the best job!
